Putin willing to hand over transcript of Russian official's meeting with Trump

The statements undercut his own aides' statements in the wake of The Washington Post report that revealed Trump shared details about a plot related to the use of laptop computers on aircraft. Trump abruptly fired Comey, ousting the nation's top law enforcement official in the midst of an investigation into whether Trump's campaign had ties to Russia's election meddling.

"Regrettably, the time President Trump spent sharing sensitive information with the Russians was time he did not spend focusing on Russia's aggressive behavior, including its interference in American and European elections, its illegal invasion of Ukraine and annexation of Crimea, its other destabilizing activities across Europe, and the slaughter of innocent civilians and targeting of hospitals in Syria", McCain said in a statement Tuesday.

The official said that Trump boasted about his access to classified intelligence in last week's meeting with Lavrov and Kislyak. United States presidents are allowed to handle classified data as they see fit, and that includes disclosing it to foreign officials.

In a shock twist, the information reportedly came from a USA ally who had not authorized Washington to share it with Moscow, a potential blow to intelligence relationships based on trust that secrets will be kept. Gen. McMaster, in particular, has tried to insert caveats or gentle corrections into conversations when he believes the president is straying off topic or onto boggy diplomatic ground.

Trump did not know the source of the information, national security adviser H.R. McMaster said at a news briefing Tuesday. According to McMaster, Trump "did not disclose any military operations that were not already publicly known".

As Trump prepares for his first foreign trip for the Middle East and Europe, lawmakers from both parties demanded a full accounting of the conversation with the Russian diplomats that some feared could lead to exposure of confidential informants helping US intelligence officials counter the Islamic State.

Trump has frequently said he wants to improve USA relations with Moscow, damaged by years of disagreement over Russia's role in Ukraine and its backing for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, said Trump is missing the point when he cites the right to discuss sensitive information. "There is no doubt that officials in the US intelligence community are also embarrassed by the president's amateurism".

The classified intelligence President Donald Trump shared with Russian diplomats last week came from Israel, reports say.

The White House acknowledged Trump made the decision essentially on the spot.

The disclosure rocked the administration as it struggled to move past the backlash over Trump's abrupt firing on May 9 of FBI Director James Comey, whose agency was investigating potential ties between Russian Federation and Trump's 2016 presidential campaign.

Israel has looked to Trump as a close ally but there has been growing apprehension over his unpredictability. Reporters spent much of the evening camped out outside of Press Secretary Sean Spicer's office, hoping for answers.

After he spoke with the Russians, Trump was informed that he had broken protocol and White House officials placed calls to the National Security Agency and the CIA looking to minimize any damage. And Putin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, "we do not want to have anything to do with this nonsense". An excerpt from an official transcript of the meeting reveals that Trump told them, "I get great intel".

"Obviously, they're in a downward spiral right now, and they've got to figure out a way to come to grips (with) all that's happening", Corker said.

CIA Director Mike Pompeo was to brief members of the House intelligence committee later Tuesday.
