Qualcomm shows off wireless charging for electric vehicles

Two Renault Kangoo vehicles drove over embedded pads in the road that transferred a charge to the cars' batteries at up to 20 kilowatts at highway speeds around 100kmh.

Renault has revealed its vision for the future of electric auto recharging.

SAN DIEGO -May 18, 2017 - Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM), today demonstrated dynamic electric vehicle charging (DEVC), which allows vehicles to charge while driving.

Telecommunications firm Qualcomm may have figured out a way to eliminate range anxiety in fully-electric cars. The demonstration was organised at the 100-metre test track built by Vedecom at Satory, Versailles, near Paris, within the FABRIC (FeAsiBility analysis and development of on-Road chargIng solutions for future electriC vehicles) project. The French carmaker said the DEVC system has been created to support real-world implementation of dynamic charging and the two Renault Kangoo Z.E. vehicles used for the demonstartion can pick up charge in both directions along the track. "The vehicles can pick up charge in both directions along the track, and in reverse, further showcasing how the Qualcomm Halo DEVC system has been created to support real-world implementation of dynamic charging".

Honda is separately testing a system that enables dynamic charging with a charging power of 180 kW while driving at a speed of 155 kmph.

Not only would this technology be useful for current EV enthusiasts, but it would be huge for the widespread adoption of electric cars.

FABRIC, which began in 2014, has 25 organizations from nine European countries focused on wireless DEVC.

Called dynamic electric vehicle charging (DEVC), the technology is integrated into a specially-built track, cutting out the need for electric cars to stop at charging stations.

"The installation of one of the world's first DEVC test platforms has provided us with a unique test facility and we look forward to expanding our expertise with the future testing", Vedecom CEO Luc Marbach said in a statement.

Commenting on the breakthrough made by the French auto maker and its new tech partners, head of Renault's electric vehicle program, Eric Feunteun said: "we see dynamic charging as a great vision to further enhance the ease of use and accessibility of EVs for all".

The technology, which is being trialled at the Fabric technology test track south of Paris, is based around U.S. tech company Qualcomm's Halo wireless charging system, which is used to charge Formula E's BMW i8 safety vehicle. "We see dynamic charging as a great vision to further enhance the ease of use of EVs, thus the accessibility of EVs for all".

Qualcomm made it clear it will not manufacture the equipment and prefers a licensing business model.
