Nigeria identifies 82 freed Chibok girls parents await word

A group of United Nations human rights experts today welcomed the release of 82 Chibok girls from Boko Haram captivity, and called on the Government of Nigeria and the global community to take all necessary steps to ensure the timely release of those under Boko Haram captivity and to provide support to the girls to ensure their rehabilitation and reintegration in full respect of their human rights.

Eighty-two Chibok schoolgirls who were released after being held for more than three years by Boko Haram will be reunited with their parents next week, according to Nigeria's minister for women.

He said, "To be honest, without appearing to speak for Boko Haram, from the outlook of these girls, they appear better in terms of their physical outlook than the 21 we received before".

Speaking while presenting a peace flag to the Nigerian army, at the Army Headquarters Garrison, Abuja, Princess Lillian Cosmos, FCT Coordinator, Africa Arise for Change Network commended President Buhari for keeping to his promise and facilitating the freedom of the girls after three years.

Nigerians and the world at large breathed a sigh of relief last Saturday when the Nigerian government announced it had secured the release of 82 more Chibok girls.

Rebecca Yaga relocated to the Nigerian capital Abuja a month before the girls were abducted by the Islamist group but she did not take her daughter along with her.

Many of the Chibok girls are Christian but were photographed in Muslim garb by their captors, and some were forced to take militants as husbands and bear their children.

She said, "I think you people are here because of the strong prayers that we have prayed together with your parents". Garba Shehu said that originally they had been negotiating the release of 83 girls, but one said she wanted to remain. The newly released girls will join that programme.

"The release of 82 of the kidnapped Chibok schoolgirls by the armed group Boko Haram is a big relief. I'm happy where I am". Some must undergo surgery, she added.

"I know that on day, they will soon all come", said Rebecca. We urge the Buhari Administration not to relent in its efforts until all the abducted Chibok girls and in fact all abducted citizens all over the North East are freed from captivity.

Human rights activists also fear some of the girls have been used by Boko Haram to carry out suicide bombings as part of the group's insurgency.

Speaking with state house correspondents, Alhassan said: "Any parents that identified their children will be brought next week to see them".
