President Donald Trump is weighing in on the Montana special election this week with a robocall in support of Republican candidate Greg Gianforte. "It's the strangest moment that's happened in my entire life reporting".

Of the apparently violent nature of the event, Johnson said, "Some voters will view this as a character issue that could hurt Gianforte at the polls". "You with The Guardian?" the man asks.

In an era of extreme congressional partisanship, toeholds like the Montana seat are valuable ground for both Republicans and Democrats. She added that Gianforte then began to punch Jacobs.

Democrats are seeing a revitalized base after Democrat Jon Ossoff almost scored a win in a heavily conservative House district in Georgia last month and a better-than-expected performance in a special House election in Kansas earlier in April. That's Greg Gianforte, you'll be very proud of him for years to come.

Gianforte's campaign released a statement later in the evening that accused Jacobs of asking "badgering questions", aggressively shoving a recorder into Gianforte's face and refusing requests to lower it.

The Fox News crew watched in astonishment as, after Jacobs pressed him on the GOP health care bill, "Gianforte grabbed Jacobs by the neck with both hands and slammed him into the ground behind him", Fox News reporter Alicia Acuna wrote in an article.

Gianforte and Democrat Rob Quist, who declined to comment, are seeking to fill the state's seat in the U.S. House left vacant when Ryan Zinke resigned to join Trump's Cabinet as secretary of the Interior Department. Three Fox News staffers said they witnessed the assault while they were waiting to interview Gianforte.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee spokesman Tyler Law says the Republican Party should publicly denounce Greg Gianforte and apologize for the millions of dollars they spent on his behalf.

"Greg then attempted to grab the phone that was pushed in his face", Scanlon said.

In 2006, the Democratic nominee for governor of Minnesota lost a close race after accusing a reporter who asked tough questions of being "a Republican whore".
