Researchers Find an Average of ~8400 Pieces of Android Malware Every Day

A new report by the security firm revealed that in the first of 2017, over 750, 000 new malware apps were discovered.

This means that the next beta build of Android O will be released within the next few months.

The research company released a report at the end of last month that detailed their findings for the first quarter of 2017. That number increased to nearly 1.5 million in 2014, before it jumped to 2.3 million 2015.

Despite Android O almost nearing launch, fragmentation remains a big issue for the Android ecosystem.

Every day developers like you are hard at work creating apps and games on Android. The vulnerability comes from the delayed nature in which these devices receive the latest software updates, leaving them wide open to attacks that may have otherwise been patched in more recent software versions. Some reports peg Android's global market share at 72%, while others go even higher.

"The problem is that third party providers do not adapt the new operating system for older devices ("older" in this case meaning one year or more)".

· Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0.3 - 4.0.4): 0.9%. Try an antivirus application, or you can reboot your phone into safe mode and try to remove the malware that way. Therefore, the best way to ensure you keep the most updated software is to purchase a device that is known for receiving the latest updates. Other models that frequently get speedy updates are the Nexus phones and Samsung Galaxy models. The Play Store's app recognition methodology will soon have more of a focus on individual apps and games that are worth noting, instead of an entire dev account. Google has sent out an email to some developers discussing the eclipse of the Top Developers badge and system, but there's also a promise of something new on the horizon. "About half of devices in use at the end of 2016 had not received a platform security update in the previous year", the duo said. It will be interesting to see what Google has up its sleeve for the future of app recognition in the Play Store.
