Results a sign voters want parties 'to work together,' Clark says

On the West Shore, the NDP showed their support remains strong, with party leader John Horgan racing to a huge victory over challengers Cathy Noel of the Liberals and Brendan Ralfs of the Greens - that despite spending very little time personally campaigning in his Langford-Juan de Fuca riding. Until those results are known, however, Premier-elect Christy Clark faces a minority situation with the Green party holding the balance of power.

"There's still 176,000 seconds on the clock and I'm going to wait to see what the final outcome is", he said, referring to the number of absentee ballots still to be counted. The Liberals only need one more seat for a majority.

Horgan said that the NDP and the Green Party can work on that initiative in the legislature. While Horgan said it's clear British Columbians want change after 16 years under the Liberals, Clark said she reads the result as a plea to the parties to work together. "He may have the effect of delegitimating his own party and the NDP by putting them in power". Her riding-by-riding look at the shift indicates it hurt the Liberals more often than the NDP.

"The game's not over", said Horgan, who refused to concede defeat on Wednesday. Reporters reminded the premier the Liberals' vote decreased in this election, to which she remarked on the Greens' success at the polls.

"They could enter into a coalition with the Liberals or the NDP, or they could prop up an NDP minority government or prop up a Liberal minority government", Moscrop explained.

"We have a range of issues in common, but my focus is on the people of British Columbia, and if Mr. Weaver and others want to join with me, I'm happy to do that". "So we're going to listen to that, and we're going to make sure that we're working across partisan lines together to find ways to respond to the message that British Columbians sent us in this election".

It could take several weeks before the final seat count is confirmed, once absentee votes are counted and any judicial recounts are conducted.

The NDP and the Green Party both campaigned on changing B.C.'s voting system, perhaps to a form of proportional representation or to a single-transferable-ballot system if that is what a panel recommends.

"That interpretation is not that the Greens hurt the NDP and allowed Christy Clark to win but in fact the NDP would have done worse in this election had it not been for the Green vote", she said. "And they voted for an economy that works for everyone, not just those at the top", he said. They elected a really significant Green presence and certainly a lot of people voted for the Greens across the province.

It comes on the heels of a cliffhanger election that left the province with a minority parliament, and the Liberals apparently in the driver's seat holding 43 seats to the NDP's 41.

He did not explicitly say if he would ask Weaver to form a coalition government, however.

"That kind of delay when oil prices are low and the project is financially questionable may be enough to kill the project, but it does have federal approval", said Harrison. Sixty per cent of those who cast ballots voted against the (Liberal) government.

Supporting minority governments is usually perilous for the smaller parties, he said.
