Now, a new senate bill might not allow teens like him to compete in high school sporting events at all.

Uresti also noted during the debate that of the dozens of witnesses who testified in committee, only three were for the bill - and they were all connected to the GEO Group, according to the witness list.

The Texas House has voted down a bill that would have put new accountability measures on police departments reporting when an officer kills a civilian.

It is the latest in a string of controversial measures that opponents say unfairly target LGBT people, immigrants and religious minorities.

The bill would give authorities the power to block kids from playing.

"This bill is not addressing who plays on what sports", Bob Hall, the bill's sponsor, said.

Bonnen's committee heard testimony for about an hour Wednesday morning before recessing for a meeting of the full House. Proponents had hoped the bill would be more palatable to the business community, which has fiercely opposed SB 6; but representatives for Texas businesses and local tourism officials said they were still not on board.

A Democratic senator, Sylvia Garcia of Houston, offered an amendment to spell out protections for transgender kids, but it was voted down. "We need to make sure they're free to participate just like everybody else".

State law already prevents athletes from using steroids, but it includes a "safe harbor" provision for students taking steroids as prescribed by a doctor.

The new bill would eliminate that.

The Texas state senate passed a bill on Wednesday that will effectively bar all trans athletes from competing in high school sports. "Transgender people are no different". Texas is one of seven states that require high school students to provide a birth certificate, proof of gender-reassignment surgery or documentation of hormone therapy, according to

Hughes, a Mineola Republican, said that the alternative is they can be released and end up "maybe in some other state" or "the feds can choose to separate parents from their children".

Now Texas lawmakers are pushing a bill that could ultimately deny Beggs, a Dallas-area junior, a chance to defend his title next year.

"(The bill) is placing a lot of faith in the ability of the state to protect these children, but the bottom line is these are prisons and there's no question about that", Sen. The bill also will raise the 5 percent cap on the auto sales tax from $300 to $500, and will create a one-time $250 fee when a new S.C. resident registers a vehicle in the state. The Senate will consider the bill.

Today is the last day for most bills that started in the House to win tentative approval. Those protections are meant to allow them to use public bathrooms that match their gender identities.

A spokesman for Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said Thursday that Stuart Bowen had committed a "serious and unacceptable lapse in judgment". It establishes criminal and civil penalties for local government entities and law enforcement that don't comply with immigration laws and detention requests, the governor's office said.
