Rohit Sharma, Mohammed Shami Return To Indian Squad For ICC Champions Trophy

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Monday announced the 15-man Indian squad, which will take part in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy. The last time these two teams met was in ICC World 2016 at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

There was uncertainty about whether the defending champions would boycott the event since they were unhappy with the outcomes of last month's International Cricket Council (ICC) meetings, where a new constitution, governance structure and financial model was passed.

India's 3-format opener KL Rahul missed the 10th edition of the Indian Premier League owing to a shoulder injury and has been subsequently ruled out for the next 2-3 months which confirmed his absence from the CT squad.

MSK Prasad, the chief selector said that youngsters like Rishabh Pant, Shardul Thakur and Kuldeep Yadav were also considered. Come what may, Rohit and Shikhar has to open the innings for India, and if they fail consistently, Rahane can replace them in the playing XI.

"The SGM may be divided on whether to send the Indian team for the Champions Trophy but the CoA is sure about its priorities".

India have been placed in Group B, alongside Pakistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka in the Champions Trophy.

Mumbai: India's chances of participating in the Champions Trophy brightened yesterday when a court-appointed panel of administrators asked the cricket board (BCCI) to pick the squad for the June 1 to 18 tournament.

Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh and Kedar Jadhav were automatic choices with former skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni fitting the role of wicket-keeper and batsman to the hilt. Meaning, Manish Pandey will play as a reserve player. It might also be last champions trophy for Dhoni and he would love to win this trophy again. "As far as Virat kohli is concerned, he had a break after injury".

The middle order looks very strong with the likes of Yuvraj Singh, who also makes a comeback to the Indian squad.

India will play their first game against arch-rivals Pakistan at Edgbaston, on June 4.
