Sacramento Area Victims Contract Botulism From Gas Station Nacho Cheese

When Lavinia started to feel sick after eating the sauce, she called her sister, Theresa Kelly.

Now, Sacramento County health officials say, Kelly is one of at least five people sickened in a botulism outbreak that has been linked to the nacho cheese at Valley Oak Food and Fuel in the Sacramento suburb of Walnut Grove.

The report continues that Kelly's partner rushed her back to the emergency room when she began vomiting and having difficulty breathing that same evening.

Another three probable cases and one suspect case are also under investigation, reports The Sacramento Bee, with all patients still in the hospital.

If treated early, botulism can be treated with an anti-toxin.

Food-borne illness outbreaks are often tied to fresh foods - unwashed raw vegetables, tainted undercooked meat, raw dairy products - but not the neon yellow nacho cheese sauce you'd get at a movie theater or convenience store.

All five people whose botulism has been confirmed have been hospitalized, the Sacramento County Health and Human Services Department said in a statement.

"We're just trying to figure out what happened", Torres said. Lavinia drizzled the Dorito's she bought at the gas station on April 21 with nacho cheese sauce from the deli area.

Kelly has been in intensive care for three weeks and has lost most of her body's functions, including the ability to communicate, the network reported.

'(The gas station) should have been more aware.

Theresa Kelly said she immediately knew something was wrong when her vibrant little sister Lavinia called her nearly a month ago. "So I don't know".

A lawsuit has been filed against the Sacramento gas station where Lavinia acquired and consumed the nacho cheese.

The Valley Oak Food and Fuel gas station has had its business permit to sell drinks and food taken away by Sacramento health officials.

Bruce Clark, the family's lawyer, would not say how much money they are suing for, but he says similar cases in the past involved millions of dollars.

Per Consumerist, according to the Centers for Disease Control's most recent National Botulism Surveillance Summary, there were 199 confirmed cases of botulism in the United States in 2015, only 39 of which were food-borne. We will use the lawsuit to learn more about the source of the food product that was contaminated.

"They're acquiring astounding medical bills", Clark said.
