Sidney Crosby not ruled out for Game 5, skates with Penguins

The scene brought back jarring memories.

Oshie called it an "amateur play", one symbolic of a night in which the Capitals failed to take advantage of a Penguins team missing Crosby, defenseman Kris Letang and forward Conor Sheary. His brain foggy. His immediate future uncertain.

Head coach Matt Niskanen suffered a double header and Crosby remained for a long time lying on the ice to the left of Braden Holtby's net.

The diagnosis came the next morning: Crosby is sidelined indefinitely with yet another concussion.

He also says the fact that Crosby needed nearly a year to recover from a concussion in early 2011 means there was a significant, residual effect on his brain.

Crosby, who was diagnosed with a concussion after taking a headshot from Capitals forward Matt Niskanen in Game 3 on Monday, skated with a few other players at the team's practice rink Thursday despite it being an off day for the Penguins.

"It's a tough moment for sure", Fleury said. "You know, you care a lot about him".

Maybe that was why he didn't exactly blame the referee who made a mistake that many of us were fooled on when it happened in real time.

Crosby knows that the brain can be a amusing and unfunny thing-that recovery doesn't always run a straight line and keep a tight schedule. "Hoping he feels better soon and see him smile again".

Crosby, who led the National Hockey League with 44 goals, spent part of Tuesday at the team's training facility being evaluated.

"He's very upbeat and he's very positive", Pittsburgh head coach Mike Sullivan said. "We got to get an extra save".

It worked. The Capitals won the game. That '92 Penguins team, like this one, was the reigning Stanley Cup champions and Lemieux, like Crosby, was the Conn Smythe Trophy victor as playoffs MVP. "We came back with two quick goals".

The Penguins deserve all the credit in the world for what they've done this postseason.

Then Crosby was concussed during training camp prior to this season and missed the first six contests as a result. Without Crosby to help generate more scoring chances, it was exactly the type of goal the Penguins need to get when granted such a strong chance.

If Sidney Crosby felt like he was good to skate, he's free to exercise that choice.

This, however, is something different.

"Our top guys tonight, I thought, weren't as good as they needed to be", Trotz said. "And we're lucky to have depth on our team". "I don't think it's something this game is looking for, especially someone who means so much to our team".

Gibson held off the Oilers over the first 10 minutes of the game when they outshot the Ducks 8-3. He will play after the league decided against holding a hearing to review the incident.

When pressed about whether or not it was a dirty play, Ovechkin repeated that it was a hockey play.

Capitals center Jay Beagle believed things could get "nasty". "It's the playoffs. That's the way we like to play". It's hard to say exactly what is wrong with Holtby other than the Vezina Trophy finalist hasn't looked up to par with his regular season brilliance. To his credit, he offered up a very level reaction after Wednesday's crushing loss in Pittsburgh. It hurt them, they lost, and now have their backs against the wall three games to one.
