Soundgarden and Audioslave rocker Chris Cornell takes his own, aged 52

Cornell becomes another in a line of lead singers from major grunge bands to die abruptly and in most cases, of unnatural causes.

After the guitarist was found dead, a Wayne County, Michigan medical examiner released information on Thursday saying that the Seattle-born star took his own life.

He said the family would be working closely with the medical examiner to determine the cause.

Along with Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Alice in Chains and several other bands, Soundgarden helped to define and popularize a heavy, often downcast, form of rock that exploded in the 1990s and hastened the end of the hair-metal era.

"Chris Cornell, a friend of mine, a friend of all of us from Soundgarden, died today and we have lost one of the most handsome voices in rock and in history".

Authorities say Cornell hanged himself in a Detroit hotel room Wednesday following a Soundgarden concert. The band went on to become one of the most successful in Seattle's emerging grunge scene, finding huge commercial success with their 1994 album, "Superunknown", whicih won two Grammys and racked up over five million sales in the U.S.

Audioslave disbanded in 2007, but Cornell and Soundgarden reunited in 2010 and released the band's sixth studio album, "King Animal" in 2012. "I was very sad to hear about Chris's passing".

The news of his death has really come as a shock to the music world.

" 'I would live without both parts, ' Cornell answered".

Telling the audience that he could never sing like Chris, he encouraged the crowd to join in and sing with him if they knew the words. He's one of those guys where whenever I hear him sing it's like, "Oh, what a great, great singer" - just a attractive, powerful, kick you in the f-king face type of a voice, which is very rare because nobody's really sang like him before.

With Eddie Vedder and Mike McCready of Pearl Jam, Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard of Mother Love Bone, Cornell and Matt Cameron, also from Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog was born to pay tribute to the musical talent of the late Andrew Wood.

Cornell leaves wife Vicky and their two children, daughter Toni, 12, and son Christopher, 11, as well as daughter Lillian, 16, from his previous marriage to Susan Silver.
