Strong gains in local polls boost May's chances in June election

And they only lost out on Northumberland County Council because of drawing straws.

However, within Scotland, the Conservatives had the biggest gains, up 164 seats to 276.

With the results in from all 88 local authorities being contested, the Conservatives won 1,900 seats, up 558; Labour won 1,151, down 320; and the pro-EU Liberal Democrats won 441, down 37.

British Prime Minister Theresa May's Conservative party on Friday made huge gains in the local and mayoral polls, indicating a victory for her Brexit strategy and boosting her chances for securing a larger parliamentary majority next month.

In Scotland, a former newspaper editor, a pharmacologist originally from Nigeria, and a former MSP are among those elected to councils across the country.

With nearly all the results in, May's party had gained control of 11 new councils, added more than 500 new councilors and taken a plum mayoral post in the Birmingham area of central England, once strong Labour Party territory.

Opinion polls give May a runaway lead in the national election of around 20 percentage points, which could hand her more than 100 more seats in parliament and bolster her hand in divorce negotiations with the EU.

"If there is an increasingly confrontational attitude between Westminster and Brussels, the [local election] results today suggest that Theresa May is the political victor domestically of that process", said Al Jazeera's Phillips.

"I've got to dispel this myth that there is a rift between Andy Burnham and Jeremy Corbyn because there simply isn't", Mr Lavery insisted, adding: "They're quite good friends".

"Voters who previously voted for all three - Lib Dem, Labour and Ukip - are now seeing that what this country needs is a government with a full, working majority to negotiate a good, successful exit from the European Union and to build a stronger, fairer Britain after that", he argued.

Meanwhile, Labour slumped to become the third largest party in Scotland's councils, and was kicked out of power in its Glasgow heartland for the first time in nearly 40 years.

"It looks as if we have made so far some encouraging gains? but it?s very early days yet".

Labour suffered a painful defeat in Glasgow, where it lost sway over the city council, under its control since 1980.

Conservatives won the West of England metro mayor contest and topped the first round of voting in the West Midlands, while Labour claimed the mayoralties in Greater Manchester, Liverpool, Doncaster and North Tyneside. Party spokesman John McDonnell described the results as tough, but "it hasn't been the wipe-out that some people predicted or the polls predicted". He insisted it is still "all to play for" in the national vote.

The survey from ORB sealed a devastating 24 hours for Mr Corbyn after his party was battered in local elections, losing hundreds of seats and the control of stronghold councils defended by Labour for decades.

"We've had some hard results overnight. We are the victims of our own success".
