Syria condemns attack by US-led coalition

In a statement, the army said the us -led anti-terror coalition attacked one of the military positions near the Tanf area in the Syrian desert near the Iraqi borders on Thursday afternoon, leaving a number of "martyrs and some material losses".

"[On Wednesday (local time)] the Coalition struck Syrian pro-regime forces advancing in a deconfliction zone near At Tanf posing a threat to USA partner forces", the US-led Coalition wrote in a tweet.

According to US military commanders, the strike was carried out in response to the entry of the regime-allied forces into a "de-escalation zone" in which USA and allied forces were operating.

A member of the US -backed Syrian rebel forces told Reuters the strikes hit a convoy of Syrian and Iranian-backed militias that were heading toward a base used by usa and U.S. -supported forces.

Meanwhile, a military source said the strike reveals the real scheme by the USA and Zionist entity against Syria.

The latest USA bill on sanctions against the Syrian government and its foreign allies, including Russia and Iran, only serves as an obstacle to the fight against terrorism and peace process in Syria, the chairman of the Russian State Duma International Affairs Committee, Leonid Slutsky, said.

Thursday's strike marks a noticeable shift on USA policy in the country, which previously only primarily focused on going after jihadi groups such as the Islamic State, and not the Iran-Assad-Hezbollah-Shia militia coalition that is also operating in Syria.

The U.S. -led coalition warplanes on Thursday struck one of the Assad regime's military sites in southern Syria near the border with Jordan.

A U.S. airstrike has struck pro-Syrian government forces for the first time in an attack near the border with Jordan.

"Such actions that were carried out against the Syrian armed forces. this is completely unacceptable".

"The Syrian army is fighting terrorist groups on its ground, and no force has the right to determine the fronts on which the army fight the terrorist groups", the statement said.

The Syrian Observervatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said eight fighters non-Syrian fighters were killed in the United States attack.

Two months of US -backed rebel advances against Islamic State militants have allowed them to secure swaths of territory in the Badia, alarming the Syrian government and its allies.

The airstrikes took place near the southern Syrian town of At Tanf, where USA and coalition forces had established a so-called "de-confliction zone", which also was home to a US training camp for moderate Syrian militias, according to a command statement posted on the coalition's Twitter site.

CENTCOM told the media that the strike destroyed "construction equipment and a tank".

The Pentagon said it had been operating in the Al-Tanf area for months training partner forces to battle IS. "It (Thursday's strike) is utterly unacceptable and a violation of Syria's sovereignty".

The U.S. military does not speak with the Syrian government. But the Russians and pro-regime forces apparently ignored warnings, and the United States then hit the convoy with a direct airstrike.

US officials said an agreement existed with Russian Federation on a so-called "deconfliction" area around Tanf garrison, meant to avoid an accidental clash of forces.

U.S. defence secretary General James Mattis denied the destruction of the convoy, which included a number of tanks, marked an escalation of America's intervention in Syria.
