The White House isn't for sale by Trump insiders

Relatives of USA president's son-in- law Jared Kushner are touring major mainland cities to woo wealthy Chinese investors for luxury projects in New Jersey while offering an American green card in return, according to a media report.

At Saturday's event, attendee Wang Yun, a Chinese investor, said the Kushner family's ties to Trump were an obvious part of the project's appeal. "That was not Ms Meyer's intention".

The visa program touted in China by the family of White House senior adviser Jared Kushner has always been targeted for reform in Washington, accused by its critics of being a way for wealthy foreigners to essentially buy United States green cards.

Nicole Kushner Meyer (3L), the sister of US White House senior adviser Jared Kushner, poses at a promotional event in Shanghai on May 7, 2017. The email noted that Jared Kushner "stepped away from the company in January and has nothing to do with this project".

The programme offers foreign nationals permanent residency - commonly known as a green card - in exchange for investments of at least half a million dollars in a U.S. business that must also create 10 American jobs. "They clearly imply that the Kushners are going to make sure you get your visa". She talked to WNYC's Sean Carlson about what she saw.

Those apartments were also developed by Kushner Companies, and about a quarter of the funding - around US$50 million - was obtained via EB-5 investment, according to a report previous year by Bloomberg News.

Potential investor Xing said a Kushner representative who spoke on Sunday stressed that EB-5 rules could change after September to raise the minimum required investment.

Although he claims to have divested his interests in One Journal Square (at least, according to attorney Blake Roberts, who advises Kushner on ethics issues), his sister's mention of his role in the administration while seeking investments has caused many to interpret this deal as having the potential to sell access to Kushner, and in turn, the White House.

"I will continue to press for the elimination of the EB-5 program", Feinstein said on Monday.

But the company said on Monday the comments were misconstrued and Ms Meyer was only pointing out he left the firm.

She has long called for the program to end, citing reports of rampant fraud and abuse. As the Post noted, she encouraged investors to apply for U.S. residency through the EB-5 visa program-a controversial initiative that was renewed the day before in federal spending legislation signed into law by President Trump. The New York Times says its reporters were kicked out of the Sunday investor presentation, along with The Post.

The other participant, Bi, who is pregnant, said she was considering immigrating to America to give her child an academic environment that is "more relaxing; where one can pursue real interests and where the child can do something that they really want to do". "As previously stated, he will recuse from particular matters concerning the EB-5 visa program".

Qiaowai is scheduled to hold more pitches for the project in Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Wuhan over the next two weeks.

Lawmakers across party lines have expressed concerns about EB-5 visas for decades. Some Chinese refer to the residency authorization as a "golden visa".
