Theresa May: Tories will invest heavily in Scotland after Brexit

Kezia Dugdale who attended a food bank in Glasgow earlier this week said Labour's proposals would make Scotland more equal

"The truth is, your party has left you, not the other way around", said Ruth Davidson, speaking alongside May at the launch of the Conservatives' Scottish manifesto election document.

"As a Labour Party, we put ourselves on the side of the vast majority of people across our country who rejected a hard Brexit and rejected independence".

She added: "Suspension doesn't change the fact that these councillors have used Labour votes to give Aberdeen a Tory council".

Labour has suspended its entire nine-strong council group in Aberdeen for joining a ruling coalition with the Conservatives.

Barney Crockett, one of the suspended councillors who was appointed Lord Provost as part of the agreement, told the same programme the action was "a procedure" they would work through.

The YouGov survey for The Times puts the SNP on 42% (+1 from last month), the Tories on 29% (+1) and Labour on 19% (+1).

The Labour councillors are, however, considering defying their national bosses in order to form a power-sharing administration, the Evening Express reported today.

Ross Thomson, the Tory candidate for Aberdeen South in the General Election, said: "Labour has been plunged into civil war after Kezia Dugdale's reckless decision to suspend all nine councillors in Aberdeen".

She said: "Had we abstained the vote would have been tied and cutting cards doesn't seem the right thing for democracy, as we felt the SNP group are dysfunctional we backed Labour this time".

The set-up in Aberdeen follows on from a Labour/Tory/independents coalition that governed the city between 2012 and 2017.

She told voters that Jeremy Corbyn was too weak to stand up for the United Kingdom, both in Scotland and in talks with the European Union as she bolstered earlier attacks on the Labour leader's credibility by Ruth Davidson, the Scottish Tory leader.

"The Scottish Executive Committee made a judgement and clearly only the people in the room will know the grounds with which they made that judgement". Davidson and May have implied it would not be until the early 2020s - the timescale in which they claim Brexit and new powers for Scotland will take to bed in.

"The reality is that it's only the Labour Party that's taking the responsible approach rooted in our values and principles, which are to oppose any deals which involve passing on austerity to communities and that would lead to job losses".

The leader of the Labour group, Frank McAveety, held his seat, also in Shettelston, after 26 years but his role as council leader looks uncertain as the SNP still hopes to seize control of the city.

Ms Dugdale refused to confirm reports that Mr Rowley had the casting vote to reject the Aberdeen deal during a visit to Edinburgh's Serenity Cafe.

She stated: "Labour can not do any deal with another party if it would result in further austerity being imposed on local communities".
