Torontonians march for science on Earth Day

"We can and must protect our environment without harming America's working families", Trump said.

President Donald Trump celebrated Earth Day Saturday and delivered a message that wove a commitment to protecting the environment with support for American workers.

"Many people seem to be forgetting those facts and it's been frustrating to watch as certain forces in our society try to squelch science or their refusal to believe in it or propose alternative realities and facts".

"In fact for every dollar that is spent on science, multiple dollars are added to the economy as a result of the output that is generated, so the funding needs to be protected", he said.

"We didn't choose to be in this battle, but it has come to the point where we have to fight because the stakes are too great", said Pennsylvania State University climate scientist Michael Mann, who regularly clashes with politicians. The event was part of a much broader effort where scientists and crowds gathered worldwide in some 500 cities to show their support for science and evidence-based research.

The March for Science started with about four hours of speakers and musical performances, and as the day went on, the National Mall filled with tens of thousands of people, with more waiting in line to get in.

Organizers say the goal of the march is not to be critical of the current administration, but to underscore the vital role scientific research plays in the lives of people in Northeast Ohio.

As with the Women's March on the day after Trump's inauguration, participants' sign game was strong at all the protests.

Some of the biggest rallies were held in Washington D.C., Chicago, and in NY.

"Policies shouldn't be informing science".

Concern about climate change and environmental pollution compelled Ron Raz to attend the march.

Vanessa Quinlivan, a biochemistry graduate student from Baltimore, Maryland said, "I made a decision to do this because I think that basic research is really important".

"While climate change is a major issue, they are concerned about a number of Trump's executive orders and his proposed budget, which proposes massive cuts to scientific research".

Critics have called out the movement for forcing scientists into the political sphere. The president has also appointed anti-science crusaders to key administration positions and reversed Obama-era environmental protections. But it should also be used to inform government policy, particularly when it comes to matters of public health, education, research funding, and fighting climate change. Protesters did not just march and chant, they even sang together - the old German folk song "Die Gedanken sind frei", or "Thoughts are free".

Rush Holt, a former physicist and Democratic congressman who runs the American Association for the Advancement of Science, said scientists find it appalling that "evidence has been crowded out by ideological assertions".
