Trump, EPA chief meet ahead of decision on climate change

The President teased his decision about the hotly debated topic in a tweet early Saturday morning Eastern time during the final leg of his first presidential trip overseas.

U.S. President Donald Trump has told "confidants", including the head of the Environmental Protection Agency Scott Pruitt, that he plans to leave a landmark global agreement on climate change, Axios news outlet reported on Saturday, citing three sources with direct knowledge...

President Trump declined to endorse the Paris climate accords on Saturday, ending his first foreign trip much as he began it: at odds with several of the nation's allies and under a cloud of questions back home about his ties to Russian Federation.

President Trump has said he'll decide this week whether the United States will remain in the Paris agreement on climate change, which asked signatory countries to set a specific goal for reducing carbon emissions.

However, in the official dispatch from the G7, which all countries typically sign onto, the U.S. did not join the climate section of the communique.

"Understanding this process, the heads of state of the government of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom and the presidents of the European Council and of the European Commission reaffirm their strong commitment to swiftly implement the Paris agreement, as previously stated at the Ise-Shima Summit".

Trump, who ran for president vowing to rip up the agreement, listened carefully to his new counterparts and is "evolving" on the issue, according to a top aide. Trump promised to "cancel" the agreement on the campaign trail.

In addition to getting pushed on the topic at the G7 summit, the president also got an earful at the Vatican, where the pope presented Trump with one of his writings on the environment and the Cardinal secretary of state further raised the issue during a bilateral meeting.

The White House has delayed a final decision on the Paris accord multiple times, but this week appears more likely for an announcement than before. "Trump is a pragmatic person, I hope he will confirm his commitments, perhaps at his own pace".

At a meeting of the Group of Seven in Sicily this week, German Chancellor Angela Merkel indicated that Trump's G7 peers lobbied him hard on the issue of climate change. "It emerged very clearly in our conversations".

After the summit, Merkel said "we in Europe have to take our fate into our own hands" and needed to play a bigger role in world affairs.

"I think he learned how important it is that the United States show leadership", Trump's chief economist Gary Cohn told reporters Friday.

While some coal interests and generators are opposed to the Paris accord, most energy companies are pushing Trump to stay in the deal. "A lot of people in my country are against this agreement", Trump allegedly said.
