Trump on Asking for Comey's Loyalty: 'I Didn't'

Trump elaborated in the interview on why he was considering the move.

The White House's explanations continued to crumble throughout the day Thursday. But he wound up creating new headaches for the White House, including with an apparent threat to Comey. Trump said in one of a string of Twitter messages.

In that hearing, Comey would have been likely to explain in even greater detail his account of the conversations he had with Trump in the weeks leading up to his termination.

Trump's nominee must be confirmed in the Senate, where Democrats and some Republicans have fiercely criticized Comey's firing, which came on Tuesday.

Trump said the discussions happened in two phone calls and at a dinner in which Comey was asking to keep his job. He leans heavily on daughter Ivanka Trump and son-in-law Jared Kushner, as well as Hope Hicks, his trusted campaign spokeswoman and Keith Schiller, his longtime bodyguard.

"We also request all documents, memoranda, analyses, emails, and other communications relating to the President's decision to dismiss Director Comey", they added.

"Mr. Comey again replied that he would give him "honesty" and did not pledge his loyalty, according to the account of the conversation", the Times reported.

Trump's advisers have repeatedly tried to downplay the Russia-election matter, with Sanders saying Wednesday the FBI was "doing a whole lot more than the Russian Federation investigation". Several former employees have said that Mr Trump recorded phone calls as a property developer in NY.

But even those who had been critical of Comey expressed suspicion over the timing of Comey's firing.

White House officials and others insisted on anonymity in order to disclose private conversations and internal deliberations. By week's end, he was musing about cutting back on the White House's televised press briefings.

The choice of a new Federal Bureau of Investigation director seen as independent from the White House will be closely scrutinized as Trump faces an avalanche of criticism for firing Comey, the man in charge of a criminal probe into his campaign's possible ties to Russian Federation.

They all said it Trump made the decision only after Attorney General Jeff Sessions and his top deputy delivered memos to Trump calling for Comey's termination because he had circumvented Justice Department leadership twice previous year in his handling of Hillary Clinton's personal email server use as secretary of state.

He then appeared to contradict himself in an interview with NBC saying that he was always going to fire Comey regardless of the advice of his legal advisors.

Trump said he would not talk about the existence of any tapes. "He's a little bit like a quarterback that gets ahead of his offensive line". Aides were also eager for Trump's first foreign trip, a high-stakes blitz through the Middle East and Europe.

"The president has nothing further to add on that", Spicer said when questioned about a recording system. "I'm moving on", Spicer said.
