Trump says trip overseas all about 'strongly protecting American interests'

Trump declared Thursday that he's the subject of the "greatest witch hunt" in political history after former FBI Director Robert Mueller was named special counsel to oversee the investigation into the Trump team's ties to Russian Federation. Foreign trips are a grueling proposition for even the most seasoned commander in chief - with their tedious summits and official dinners, stifling protocol and on-camera moments ripe for a misstep that can cause a diplomatic incident or ignite a political firestorm. Two officials said they feared that a hard trip might even lead the president to hand off future traveling duties to Vice President Mike Pence. Obama's agenda and announcements on those trips were completely overshadowed by the campaign.

"Saudi Arabia is delighted", Henderson said. Thus, the first leg of his trip, at least, Trump is less likely to hear about these things from his hosts.

In general, the American public responds positively to seeing their president meeting with world leaders, reassuring them of our leadership overseas, and coming to agreements on matters of global importance.

McMaster's belief in American soft power was most evident in his recent press briefing on Trump's upcoming first overseas visit to the Middle East.

Trump is known to be a homebody, someone who greatly prefers sleeping in his own bed, golfing at his own courses, dining at his own properties.

Given all that is going in Washington right now, perhaps Trump will show the world a side of himself that we have not seen enough of - one that is more polished, in control and reliably predictable. "To make sure the president feels comfortable around a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation table". How will he adapt?

Trump is visiting Saudi Arabia, Israel and the Vatican, and it isn't a coincidence. The trip was billed as a chance to visit places sacred to three of the world's major religions while creating face time with Arab, Israeli and European leaders.

Trump's itinerary is heavy with religious symbolism. This is not a battle about cultures. "And their - the goodness of people of all faiths will prevail over this evil".

Apart from Saudi officials, Trump will also meet leaders of more than 50 Muslim countries, including the six nations that form the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

"President Trump will not come to Riyadh because he loves us".

Trump, during the campaign, had said the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation alliance was obsolete. Now that he's president he says it isn't obsolete.

"It's nearly always true that when a president goes on a big foreign trip, especially one that has some important summits. that that dominates the news and knocks most other stuff out", said Republican strategist Charlie Black. No word yet on whether Keith will pull from his extensive list of "patriotic" songs written in response to the 9/11 attacks like "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue" or "Made in America", with their lyrics about boots in asses, King James (he of the bible) and Uncle Sam-but the imagined optics of such setlist choices is a wonderous one. The memorial marks how the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation countries responded after the September 11 attack on America.

Trump will also meet newly elected French President Emmanuel Macron. Although Trump didn't explicitly endorse his opponent Marine Le Pen, he clearly had an affinity for her nationalist ideas and she an affinity for his. United States allies in Israel and Saudi Arabia often expressed deep dissatisfaction with the Obama administration's foreign policy, and outreach to Iran, capped by the controversial nuclear deal. So far no action has been taken against them. What sorts of "deliverables" will Trump come away with during this trip and will he defer to the leaders he's meeting with or be persuaded by their arguments?

Though, the biggest goal of the trip, may simply be to build bonds with the dozens of leaders he will cross paths with over the next nine days.

"It's really meant to be more of a touching base for the president", said Heather Conley, former deputy assistant secretary of state in the Bureau for European and Eurasian Affairs.

Mr Trump has frequently targeted the country while opposing the landmark nuclear deal struck in 2015, claiming to put Tehran "on notice" following a ballistic missile test in February, with Ayatollah Ali Khamenei responding by calling nationwide protests, where anti-US demonstrators burned flags and shouted "death to America".
