Trump scandals reach tipping point: Special counsel appointed

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein's meeting with senators on Thursday grew especially heated when he faced questions from two frustrated liberal Democrats, according to multiple people familiar with the meeting. Now, some of what the senators learned was classified, but I think the public takeaway is this detail that Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill shared with reporters.

Because it was a closed briefing, it's unclear exactly how Rosenstein described how he knew Trump would fire Comey.

Durbin added that Rosenstein declined to say who told him to write the memo. In addition to complaining he was being abused in unprecedented ways, he took aim at his former presidential rival, Hillary Clinton, saying she never faced a special counsel despite "all the illegal acts that took place" in her campaign.

Conversations on Capitol Hill this week have been dominated by a series of bombshell reports alleging that President Donald Trump shared sensitive information with Russian officials in Oval Office and tried to influence an FBI investigation into one of his former top aides.

Ex-FBI Director James Comey was sacked by President Trump on May 9.

Once again, Trump's tweets on Thursday saw him stake out a radical departure from the official White House line on an important issue, a habit that has repeatedly undermined his press operation in recent days, and made it even more hard for his administration to move on from a string of self-imposed crises.

Mr. Trump said he thinks "it's a very, very negative thing". Lindsey Graham, said he was convinced that Mueller's appointment would hinder Congress' probing.

"Director Mueller will still be in the chain of command under the Trump-appointed leadership of the Justice Department", Pelosi said in a statement Wednesday.

Trump claimed that the report on Comey's memo was not true.

House investigators said they were plowing full speed ahead with their own inquiry - one source noted that the appointment of a special counsel didn't matter much because Comey had not been providing House investigators much access to begin with.

With nearly no warning, the Justice Department appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller Wednesday as special counsel in charge of the bureau'...

Former FBI Director James Comey, who had previously led the investigation, was sacked by Trump on May 9.

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham of SC told reporters that it appears the FBI investigation is turning into a criminal investigation rather than a counterintelligence probe.

But you know, the distinction is that the special counsel, Robert Mueller, is focused on the potential ties between the Russian government and the Trump presidential campaign.

Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal, a former CT attorney general, told reporters, "The special prosecutor is doing an investigation of criminal allegations that are extremely serious, including possible obstruction of justice". Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein made the groundbreaking announcement about the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director's appointment on Wednesday, May 17.

The White House isn't releasing a comprehensive itinerary for Mrs. Trump, citing security concerns.

Reportedly, Trump was unaware that Rosenstein planned to make the appointment until the formal announcement.

Mr Comey succeeded him, having been appointed by Mr Obama.
