Trump tweets warning to Comey over leaks

President Trump and former FBI Director James Comey are the most prominent players in the saga over Comey's removal.

He tweeted that Mr Comey had "better hope there are no "tapes" of our conversations", suggesting such tapes, if they existed, might contradict him.

Connolly wasn't the only one to suggest Trump had broken the law.

Trump says Comey had told him three times he was not under investigation in the Russian Federation probe. Even before Trump's provocative tweets, the White House was scrambling to clarify why Comey was sacked.

The FBI probe and parallel congressional investigations have hung over Trump's presidency since he took office in January and threaten to overwhelm his policy priorities. That's far different from the White House's initial account in the hours after Comey's firing. "I was going to fire Comey", Trump said.

Earlier on Friday, President Trump reiterated his view that reports about collusion with the Russian government by members of his 2016 campaign are "fabricated". During the dinner, Comey refused to pledge his loyalty and instead offered the president his honesty. He declined to do so at least twice during the dinner, The Times reported, citing two people close to Comey who had knowledge of the conversation.

White House spokesman Sean Spicer told a news briefing that Trump did not demand Comey's loyalty.

"I think the president wants loyalty to this country and to the rule of law", Spicer said during Friday's press briefing.

Trump says Comey had told him three times he was not under investigation in the Russian Federation probe. He said in an interview on Thursday with NBC News that Comey gave him this assurance during the White House dinner and in two phone conversations. And on Friday, a person close to the former director recounted a Comey-Trump dinner in January in which Trump asked for a pledge of loyalty.

In brief remarks to a group of military mothers and spouses at a Mother's Day event, Trump got a round of applause when discussing proposed defense-spending increases.

By Trump's account, narrated in an interview to NBC, Comey sought the meeting to ask to continue his job, although FBI Directors are appointed to a ten-year term and Comey is only in his third year.

The White House also changed its narrative about whether the president had chose to fire Comey based on the recommendations by Rosenstein and Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

"As a very active President with lots of things happening, it is not possible for my surrogates to stand at podium with flawless accuracy!"

"Maybe the best thing to do would be to cancel all future "press briefings" and hand out written responses for the sake of accuracy???"

The top House Democrats on the Oversight and Judiciary Committees sent a letter to White House Counsel Donald McGahn to request copies of "all recordings in possession of the White House regarding this matter". On Thursday Trump said he would have fired Comey regardless of any such recommendations.

The daughter of former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee has become central to the White House's changing, contradictory narrative about why Comey was sacked, as several of her statements about the incident have been called into question.

There is also a suggestion Mr Comey had asked for more resources for the Federal Bureau of Investigation inquiry.
