Trump views Germany as political opponent: senior SPD lawmaker

Europe must step up as a player in world affairs, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Tuesday, signalling that the European Union needs to take control of its destiny in the era of US President Donald Trump.

The German chancellor reiterated Tuesday that the German-U.S. relationship is of "outstanding importance", but suggested that Europe would "take our fate into our own hands" moving forward.

Chancellor Angela Merkel hosted an informal dinner for Prime Minister Modi at the Schloss Meseberg, outside Berlin.

Trump's policy toward climate change is another point of contention with many European countries. She shaded his wall, and he described Germany as "very, very bad" for the US on trade.

In short, it seems that the time for a New-er World Order may be at hand, and many are not too happy.

During a press conference Tuesday with Canadian Premier Justin Trudeau, Gentiloni affirmed the importance of ties with the United States, but said: "We have fundamentally different goals which we can not renounce, such as climate".

Trump's recent run of criticism aimed at Germany began last week at a G7 meeting, in which the President blasted traditional USA allies over North Atlantic Treaty Organisation obligations and made clear that he was more than willing to go it alone on climate change and trade.

But Tuesday, Merkel clarified that she remains committed to strong ties between the USA and Germany.

Noting that India attaches great value to the German partnership and has had several meetings with CEOs from that country, Modi said that India had been progressively easing its rules on doing business to encourage foreign investment.

Germany, overall, exports $270 billion more than it imports, and critics say that partially reflects questionable policies the Germany government has promoted during years of economic unrest on the continent.

On her part, Merkel said India has proved to be a reliable partner and the two sides have been able to deepen cooperation. In response, Merkel's biggest political opponent in the upcoming election, Martin Schultz, has slammed Trump's treatment of Merkel.

Financial Times Gideon Rachman took issue with Merkel's comments after she implied the days where Germany could rely on the western alliance were "over to a certain extent", adding "I have experienced this in the last few days".

Trump reportedly pushed Germany on its trade deficit with the US and admonished much of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation alliance for failing to meet its agreed upon spending targets for collective defense.

Also, during the presidential election in France, the other key member of the EU, Trump tacitly backed the far-right candidate Marine Le Pen and her vocal support to leave the EU.
