UNESCO passes Jerusalem resolution critical of Israel

On Wednesday, the Foreign Ministry posted several tweets on the key elements of the resolution outlining its significance and components.

The resolution also refers to UN Security Council Resolution 2334, which in December declared all Israeli settlements, including in East Jerusalem, illegal under global law.

UNESCO passed a resolution on Tuesday at the organisation's Paris headquarters, denouncing actions taken by Israel to alter the character and status of the holy city of Jerusalem.

He, however, noted that "since the Palestinian Authority would like to make East Jerusalem the capital of an eventual state, picking Jerusalem as the site of an embassy would be a clear signal that a country favours one side over the other".

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon said that the Swedish ambassador was received by Rodica Radian-Gordon, the ministry's deputy director general for Western Europe, and Alon Bar, its deputy director of global organizations. Last October, UNESCO passed two anti-Israel resolutions with harsher language, denying all Jewish and Christian connections to Jerusalem's holy sites.

Mr Trump pledged to move the embassy during the election campaign but since becoming president and meeting with a number of Arab leaders said merely he would like to see the move take place eventually.

Israel's annual contribution to the United Nations amounts to over $40 million, a spokesman for the mission told JTA in an email in January after Israel said it would withhold $6 million following a Security Council resolution the previous month condemning settlements.

Meanwhile, Days of Palestine reports, the Israeli Foreign Ministry summoned the Swedish Ambassador to Israel, Carl Magnus Nesser, on Wednesday, following Sweden's support for the UNESCO resolution.

Carmel Shama-Hacohen, Israel's ambassador to UNESCO, wearing the country's flag around his shoulders, said Israel will stay in its eternal capital despite the resolution's approval.

"More countries opposed this resolution than a year ago and fewer countries supported it", Netanyahu said. Ultimately, Italy informed the other European countries the day before the vote that it planned to oppose the resolution and break the consensus.

Netanyahu's statement marks the third time in less than a year that Israel has reacted to United Nations resolutions it deems biased against it by announcing the slashing of its payments to the body.
