United Airlines reaches settlement with passenger violently dragged off flight

Physician Dragged Off Flight Settles With United

A Kentucky doctor who was dragged off a United flight after he refused to give up his seat to crew members has reached a settlement with the airline for undisclosed amount.

Before the settlement was announced, United released an updated list of procedures Thursday based on its investigation of the incident.

The announcement comes the same day United outlined several policy changes in response to the April 9 incident on Flight 3411.

"Going forward, he hopes United takes the lead in inspiring the entire airline industry to supply passengers the dignity, respect and fairness we all deserve", Demetrio said.

A video screengrab shows passenger David Dao being dragged off a United Airlines flight at Chicago O'Hare International Airport on April 9. The family planned to file a lawsuit against the airline. The passenger's lawyer said his client lost two front teeth in the scuffle, incurred a concussion and a broken nose.

Demetrio said in his statement Dao had become an "unintended champion for the adoption of changes which will certainly help improve the live of literally millions of travelers".

While not a factor in this month's incident, United also said that starting in June it will pay customers $1,500 with no questions asked if the airline loses their bag.

"Both Dr. Dao and I applaud United for promptly addressing the many issues that have plagued passenger satisfaction in the arena of airline customer service", Demetrio said in the statement Thursday.

Lawyers for Dao had been preparing to go to court against United.

Demetrio said there was no need to proceed with separate litigation against the city.

Other changes directly related to the incident with Dr. Dao include limiting the use of the use of law enforcement to safety and security issues only and not requiring customers already on the plane to involuntarily give up their seat.

The sum that Dao received was not disclosed as part of the deal his lawyers reached with the airliner, but the attorneys called the settlement "amicable". Munoz said if airlines can't overbook there will be more empty seats and fares will rise.

Last year Southwest bumped 15,000 passengers off flights, more than any other USA airline.

The fiasco, you'll surely recall, launched a public-relations nightmare-and subsequent ongoing triage-for United airlines.

After additional footage revealed that Dao had been calm throughout the confrontation, United's PR team reversed course.
