USA strike hits pro-Assad forces Syria

Syria and its ally Russian Federation have condemned air strikes by the USA -led coalition on pro-Syrian government forces near the Jordan border, BBC News reports.

In a statement, the army said the USA -led anti-terror coalition attacked one of the military positions near the Tanf area in the Syrian desert near the Iraqi borders on Thursday afternoon, leaving a number of "martyrs and some material losses".

The US said the attack targeted "pro-regime forces. that posed a threat to US and partner forces" in the nearby Tanf base where American troops train what they call "moderate" militants.

US forces bombed a militia aligned with Syrian president Bashar Assad in southern Syria, a Pentagon official confirmed Thursday.

The official did not give a number for how many soldiers were killed, but said the Syrian army was fighting terrorism and no one else had the right to decide in which areas it can carry out operations.

The Trump administration has embraced escalation of USA military action in Syria, as it did in April when it launched missile strikes on a Syrian air base in response to a chemical attack on civilians.

A convoy of twenty vehicles approached the town of An Tanf on Wednesday night, evidently searching for opposition fighters and raising concerns among the USA coalition.

The Syrian regime said the air strike hit without elaborating and hampered "its efforts to fight Daesh".

Plans to establish de-confliction zones for Syria were guaranteed by Iran, Russia and Turkey in their most recent peace talks in Astana, Kazakhstan.

The latest strikes are the first against government forces since the United States launched cruise missile strikes on a Syrian air base in April in the face of army advances against foreign-backed terrorists.

"We are still confirming the details but according to some reports several dozen civilians died as a result of this strike", he was reported as saying by Russian media.

Although the Western commanders instructed their troops to demonstrate a "show of force", the Syrian troops refused to "move out of the deconfliction zone", a source told Fox News.

Muzahem al-Saloum, from the Maghaweer al-Thawra group, told Reuters that the jets struck after rebel forces clashed with advancing Syrian and Iranian militias that were about 27km from the base.

A USA airstrike launched in Syria in April. "Trump does not have Congressional authorization to attack Syria, a country that has not attacked U.S.".

He said: "We are not increasing our role in the Syrian civil war".
