Vanity Fair's 'The Last Jedi' photoshoot is full of fascinating new details

Speculation is already building over the future of the franchise with the approach of the final movies by 2020 but, long before then, fans have Rian Johnson's "The Last Jedi" - the second of the sequels - to look forward to in December. Vanity Fair says they wanted to use this cover as a tribute to the actress and the lasting impact she left on the Star Wars series. Check it out below.

The new covers debuted today. Benicio del Toro and Laura Dern are nowhere in sight. He states "You'll see-there's a reason why we call him DJ". They held a competition to see who could get to a million Twitter followers first. Said to have its exteriors shot in Croatia and its interiors in the Pinewood Studios, the planet was rumored to be the spot where John Boyega's Finn gathers intel on the First Order. So does that mean we'll be seeing two groups? We can't wait to find out what all of that is about!

The late Carrie Fisher appears solo on one of the four covers celebrating the 40th anniversary of "Star Wars". Even though the film fiercely mined nostalgia from the original trilogy for all its worth, this moment showed that the new set of movies is determined to explore bold new territory.

Understandably, the covers don't give anything away in terms of plot. It's not like they would spoil anything right before they release the film.

The new behind the scenes video takes us inside the photo shoot with Annie Leibovitz and the cast of the upcoming eighth installment of the Skywalker saga. I'm sure it will inspire many to purchase magnificent flowing space capes and imposing fighter pilot jackets as worn by Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac), Finn (John Boyega), and new character Rose Tico (Tran). Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, he talks about his instantly lovable character, who ended "The Force Awakens" fighting Adam Driver's Kylo Ren, holding his own but still winding up all messed-up and unconscious. For it to work you'd have to jettison the hugely important fact that Luke is in self-imposed exile and that Leia has become a respected General rather than a ground soldier, not to mention shifting focus from the protagonists for a bit of what could generously be described as nostalgia-drenched fan service. "I guess I saw it as the job of this middle chapter to challenge all of those characters-let's see what happens if we knock the stool out from under them", Johnson says.

The scene in question is the ultimate confrontation of Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and Darth Vader in Star Wars: Episode 5 - Empire Strikes Back, which led to the revelation that they are related.
