'We will get this done' Trump promises Israeli-Palestinian peace

"But we will be working diligently", Trump said during a joint appearance with Abbas at the White House. Trump said he saw a "very good chance" of a deal, and Abbas said the Palestinians have "hope" with Trump in office.

But the scale of that challenge was quickly made clear as Abbas repeated the conditions Palestinians have insisted on for years: the creation of an independent Palestinian state based on the borders that existed before the Arab-Israeli war of 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital; the right of return for refugees; and freedom for prisoners in Israeli cells.

Abbas needs Trump's support to legitimize his power, and Ross encouraged Trump to press Abbas to make concessions, such as ceasing sending money to jailed Palestinians who had killed Israelis.

"I believe that we can be true partners to you to bring about a historic peace treaty", Abbas said.

"I'm looking at two-state and one-state, and I like the one that both parties like", Trump said at a news conference alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

US President Donald Trump and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas speak in the Roosevelt Room during a joint statement at the White House on May 3, 2017.

Trump - who promised during the campaign to move the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem - also noted that Abbas was at the White House in 1993 for the signing of the Oslo Accords.

The action would be seen as provocative because the city, claimed by both sides, had always been considered an issue for peace negotiations.

And in his White House meeting with Netanyahu on February 15, Trump raised another sensitive issue: Israeli settlements on land in dispute with the Palestinians.

Israel had been rapidly expanding construction in the West Bank and East Jerusalem - something many see as a hinderance to peace.

Palestinians are watching closely, including the leader of the radical Hamas movement Khaled Meshaal, who called on Trump to break with past approaches to Middle East peace.

While Trump is committed to peace, his rhetoric on what it would take to get it has sometimes wavered on the idea of a two-state solution and bucked orthodox foreign policy premises.

In between thanks and compliments for Trump, Abbas reiterated the importance of establishing a Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders. "I will be a mediator, an arbitrator or a facilitator. and we will get this done".

Trump noted that over the course of his life he'd heard "that perhaps the toughest deal to make" is the one between Israel and Palestine.

"It is about time for Israel to end its occupation of our people and our land", a reference to Jewish settlement building in the West Bank.

The Palestinian leader also praised Trump's reputation as a dealmaker, saying that would be a benefit in their talks with the Israelis.

While Abbas will be challenged on the payments, Trump will also use their meeting to recommit the USA to helping the Palestinians improve their economic conditions, officials said.
