Wet weather lingering in Colorado Springs area

A strong thunderstorm band swept through the Denver area between 9 and 10 p.m. bringing heavy rain up to an inch per hour in some areas along with hail in some spots according to the National Weather Service

The storm has created headaches for travellers on highways, caused thousands of power outages and forced schools and businesses to close.

The National Weather Service in Boulder says Thursday night into the early morning hours Friday are set to be the most potent for the city when snowfall could be moderate to heavy at times.

Heavy snow is also expected in the foothills west of Denver and in the mountains.

The 10-day forecast, which includes Memorial Day weekend, appears to be for dry weather, said Ben Moyer, a meteorologist with the Weather Service. Many other locations picked up between two and three feet.

Roads were wet and slick in areas, but on-and-off rain and snow showers will continue Friday with little to no additional accumulation in the Denver metro area.

Expect highs of 44 degrees Friday, 56 degrees Saturday and 62 degrees Sunday, according to the weather service. Farther south, 36 inches of snow has been reported in Allenspark, Colorado, about 65 miles northwest of Denver.

BOULDER | A May snow dump across Colorado has prompted some emergency warming shelters to re-open after being closed for the season.

As expected, much of the snow that fell here at lower elevations melted shortly after hitting the ground. Any slope with eight inches or more of new or wind-drifted snow could be especially hazardous.

Before noon on Thursday, Conifer has already seen at least a foot of snow, Castle Rock three inches, Aurora one inch and Louisville two inches.

It will be mostly sunny on Saturday with a high of around 55 degrees.
