What will we see in Pennsylvania during the solar eclipse of 2017?

Based on NASA, the lunar transit lasted nearly an hour or so, between 2:24 and three:17 p.m. EDT, using the moon covering about 89 percent from the sun in the peak of their journey over the sun's face. A close look at the image will make you notice the subtle, bumpy outline of these topographical features.

On August 21st, the United States will have an epic front row seat to a total solar eclipse - one that can be seen from the coasts of SC to Oregon.

Depending on your location, the totality phase of the eclipse may last anywhere from a minute to 2 minutes and 40 seconds.

Another lunar transit will occur later this summer time on August 21, in which the moon is only going to barely hide area of the sun.

More details about the mission are likely to be revealed soon, when Nasa officially announces the Solar Probe Plus mission. It sounds simple, but its mission is complex: to investigate how the sun's magnetic field is generated, how it's structured and what happens when it burps magnetic energy out into space - sometimes straight toward Earth.

If you're a big fan of solar astronomy, jump onto NASA TV on Wednesday, 3pm Greenwich Mean Time (11am Eastern Daylight Time; 1am Australian Eastern Standard Time) to hear for yourself what the researchers are planning. It appeared to be rugged with craters, valleys and mountains.

Because the Moon has no atmosphere to distort sunlight, its horizon is clearly visible in the animation. In the rest of the country -as well as in parts of South America, Africa, Europe and Asia- people will be able to see a partial eclipse. Visualizers used data from NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, or LRO, coupled with NASA topographical data of Earth, to precisely map the upcoming eclipse in unprecedented detail.

The interesting part is that during the partial solar eclipse, the surface of the moon was visible.

The Solar Probe Plus event will take place at the University of Chicago's William Eckhardt Research Center Auditorium.

According to NASA, the surface temperature of the Sun is only about 5,500 degrees Celsius.

"The spacecraft will explore the sun's outer atmosphere and make critical observations that will answer decades-old questions about the physics of how stars work".

Due to be launched around August next year, the robust little probe will swing past Venus seven times over the course of seven years to fine-tune an orbit that will take it within 6 million kilometres (a little under 4 million miles) of the Sun's surface - or photosphere - in 24 elliptical loops.
