Why Trump's combative trade stance makes US farmers nervous

The administration of the US President Donald Trump formally notified Congress on Thursday of its intention to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

Through these negotiations, the USA seeks to support higher-paying jobs in the country and to grow its economy by improving opportunities to trade with Canada and Mexico. At the joint news conference, Videgaray told reporters that the Mexican government welcomes NAFTA renegotiations, which he said will "make our trade agreement better - better for the people of Mexico, the people of the USA, and the people of Canada".

"Trump's actions to renegotiate NAFTA will only deliver a better result, however, if he operates with a "workers first" perspective - and so far, he hasn't", said Merkley in a statement. "While our economy and businesses have changed considerably, Nafta has not". Washington's current political upheaval - and Mr. Trump's trade-related threats to neighbors - could also derail a deal.

The trade agreement has been a lightning rod for criticism since it was being negotiated in the early 1990s.

"I'm ready to sit down and be be a constructive part of fixing this problem, but we need a little more seriousness and a little more engagement from the executive branch if we're going to make that happen", Niles-area Democratic Rep. Tim Ryan said at a Capitol Hill press conference.

"With this letter, we intend to notify not just Congress, but all our trading partners, that free and fair trade is the new standard for USA trade deals".

Trump made renegotiation of NAFTA a staple of his presidential campaign past year, asserting that the United States was at a disadvantage in trade with its northern and southern neighbors. TPP's objective was precisely to establish a modern approach to free trade by encompassing new products and services - sectors in which the USA has most to gain - and by making labor and environmental standards easier to enforce. "Since NAFTA was implemented, USA agricultural exports to Canada and Mexico have tripled and quintupled, respectively".

"NAFTA has been vital to the growth of the US insurance industry, but as with any agreement that's almost a quarter of a century old, NAFTA can be improved".

Adding data privacy and security provisions in the trade pact with Canada and Mexico would modernize the agreement to more accurately reflect the scope of commerce in the age of the internet.

On Thursday, Mexican Foreign Secretary Luis Videgaray met with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson to discuss US-Mexico relations.

"From the beginning more than a quarter century ago, the Teamsters have been front-and-center in sticking up for workers and their rights under the North American Free Trade Agreement".

He says the US manufacturing industry has been decimated by NAFTA, a deal the White House considers deeply unfair.

"Before NAFTA went into effect - by the way, NAFTA, a total disaster - there were 280,000 autoworkers in Michigan", Trump said in a March 15 speech at the American Center for Mobility in Ypsilanti. The letter also provides specifics about what the USA wants to discuss during the negotiations.

"NAFTA's track record is one of economic growth and middle-class job creation, both here in Canada and throughout North America", she said. The chamber's No. 1 request is that renegotiation of the treaty does no harm to the trade relationship between Canada and the United States.

"Our trade agreements must be judged by whether they create jobs and grow the paychecks of hard-working Americans".
