For the first time, two Netflix films are competing for the Palme d'Or this year. But it wasn't always so fashion-focused.

This year marks the 70th birthday of the world's biggest film festival, with A-listers including Nicole Kidman, Clint Eastwood and Will Smith set to grace the glitzy French resort amid "unprecedented" tight security. Throughout this year's Cannes Film Festival, Getty will have a team of 80 people, which includes photographers and videographers, social-media experts, picture editors, assignment editors, and technicians. The 70th Cannes International Film Festival is held here from May 17 to May 28. The festival relented and next year won't accept streaming-only films.

Pedro Almodovar, president of the festival jury, has taken a break from posing for the photographers and chose to take a spot amongst them, being handed a camera and shot his way- until an official asked him to get back to his original duty.

Others in the running for top honours include Happy End, another film set against the backdrop of the migrant crisis by Amour director Michael Haneke, who is seeking a record-breaking third Palme d'Or.

Bong Joon-ho's Okja and Noah Baumbach's The Meyerowitz Stories are up for the prize, but critics have hit out at their inclusion and a new rule has been introduced for next year requiring films to have had theatrical distribution in French cinemas.

Jury members from right Agnes Jaoui, Fan Bingbing, Jessica Chastain, Will Smith, Jury president Pedro Almodovar, Paolo Sorrentino, Gabriel Yared, Park Cha-Wook and Maren Ade pose for photographers during the photo call for the Jury at the 70th worldwide film festival, Cannes, southern France, Tuesday, May 16, 2017.

At the jury press conference earlier on Wednesday, jury president Almodovar said that "it would be a huge paradox that the Palme d'Or or another award-winning film could not be seen in theaters".

"The size of the screen should not be smaller than the chair on which you're sitting. It should not be part of your everyday setting", the Spanish filmmaker said. "You really have to have the feeling of being humble and small compared to the big screen", he added.

I just wanted to say I have a 16-year-old and an 18-year-old and a 24-year-old at home, and they go to the movies twice a week and they watch Netflix.

"In my house, Netflix has been nothing but an absolute benefit", Smith said of his children's viewing habits. After the group shot, the jury - comprised of Almodovar, Smith, Fan Bingbing, Paolo Sorrentino, Maren Ade, Jessica Chastain, Agnès Jaoui, Park Chan-wook and Gabriel Yared - made their way to the top of their stairs.

Italian star Monica Bellucci hosted Cannes's opening ceremony on Wednesday night, with French drama "Ismael's Ghosts", starring Marion Cotillard, as the opening film. Netflix brings a great connectivity for them to the world. This is also the first festival held since the nearby Nice attack a year ago that killed 86 people.

Festival director Thierry Fremaux issued a statement last week saying that only movies opening in French cinemas would make the list.
