"Alongside continuing support for our great national companies, we've funded inventive, pioneering arts organisations and a new range of museums across the country".

Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce chief executive Paul Faulkner, who launched the Birmingham Cultural Investment Enquiry previous year, said: "This announcement from the Arts Council represents a strong vote of confidence in the cultural sector in Birmingham".

Hertfordshire is to benefit from more than £6-million pounds in Arts Council funding.

It means they are guaranteed funding for four years, and represent "some of the best art practice in the world".

"The Factory will have innovation at its centre and artists at its heart", Gasper told us.

"It will be a tool for learning, providing practical routes to employment through an extensive skills and training programme", she continued about how it will benefit the local community.

Dorothy Wilson, chairman of Culture Central, said: "Over the past year we have been building a new approach to cultural sector working and investment in Birmingham through Culture Central. We are looking forward to it!"

Also receiving a funding thumbs up for the next four years are Grizedale Arts, £790,784; Carlisle's Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery, £4,663,444; Penrith-based Eden Arts, £400,000, and Cumbria Theatre Trust, which runs Keswick's Theatre by the Lake, is in line for funding to the tune of £2,416,268. "We will nurture and support diverse new voices and talent, bringing them together with the most brilliant and creative established artists and practitioners in the industry".

Cressida Pollock, ENO's chief executive, said: "We are delighted to have been readmitted ..."

The newly announced recognition for the theatre, which will take effect from April 2018, will give it the same national status as city venues including Liverpool Philharmonic Hall and Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse.

For the first time, 72 museums and 7 library organisations will also be part of the Arts Council's National Portfolio including library services in Devon, Barking & Dagenham and St Helens, and museums including the SS Great Britain ship in Bristol, Museum of Rural Life in Reading and Reading Museum, Woodhorn Museum in Northumberland and the Tank Museum in Dorset.

"This includes over 50 per cent of free activity for 6.2 million arts attenders, collaborative national and global work and dynamic learning and participation opportunities for thousands of schoolchildren each year".
