Anti-Trump gunman attacks US lawmakers, dies in shootout

President Donald Trump called for unity after House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., was shot and wounded Wednesday morning when a man opened fire at Republican lawmakers and staff during a practice for a congressional baseball game.

Scalise, a conservative Republican from Louisiana, was wounded when James T. Hodgkinson opened fire on the lawmakers practicing for a charity baseball game.

Scalise appears to have been shot in the hip and it appears two Capitol Hill police agents were also shot. Dave Reichert, R-Washington, a former sheriff, briefed House Republicans on safety measures for district offices amid health care protests.

A local resident who posted a video of the scene after the shooting said, "There were probably about 80 to 100 shots fired over there". The second injured congressman was not identified.

In an address to Congress, House Speaker Paul Ryan said, "I ask each of you to join me to resolve, to come together".

U.S. Senator Jeff Flake used his belt as a makeshift tourniquet to stop the staffer's bleeding, Williams said.Taking cover behind home plate, U.S. Representative Mo Brooks saw a rifle pointing from a chain link fence behind the third base dugout.

A bystander with a cellphone camera happened to be recording at the time the first shots started, and captured the event. In 2006, he was charged with battery and aiding damage to a motor vehicle. Last year, he volunteered for the Democratic campaign of Sen. Bernie Sanders, who condemned the attack Wednesday.

"I'm a public figure, and the rhetoric and the vitriol in the public discussion is ... horrible", he said. Violence of any kind is unacceptable in our society.

"I condemn this action in the strongest possible terms".

"He didn't say anything. he was just shooting", said Peoples, a fitness instructor at a nearby YMCA. The two Capitol police officers who reportedly killed the shooter are heroes, he said. Some now say we need to see more of those moments.

"We are united. We are united in our shock". As in the past, some conservatives criticized any mention of gun legislation too close to the shooting, with the Daily Caller publishing an article titled "Steve Scalise Was Still Bleeding, And Liberals Were Calling For Gun Control".

"Ninety-three individuals a day", McAuliffe said.

Four people were shot in the attack, including Representative Steve Scalise, who's listed as being in critical condition.

During a press conference authorities from Alexandria and Capitol Police said it was very early on in the investigation and they will not say much about the incident. And one IN senator was even near the shooting when it happened.

The Congressional Baseball game for charity will take place as planned on Thursday.

"There must have been 50 to 100 shots fired", he told CNN.

"[Scalise] goes down but is moving, and is crawling towards the outfield".

He added: "Please pray for my colleagues, I am unsure of their condition". "If you belong to the gym, they think 'well, that's a perk you shouldn't have, '" said Rep. Mike Doyle of Pennsylvania, the manager of the Democratic team. "My heart goes out to my fellow members of Congress, to their staffers, and to the Capitol Police officers at the scene".

"Trump is a Traitor". A public event that had been scheduled by Trump at the Labor Department on Wednesday afternoon was canceled.

The anti-Trump ravings of Hodgkinson will be, indeed, as Ryan said, a test. "I guess he was exhausted of the politics".
