Apple HomePod Smart Speaker Goes Official At WWDC 2017

Apple has announced it is is launching a smart home speaker and electronic assistant called HomePod, created to compete with Amazon's Echo and Google's Home devices.

Tim Cook attends Apple's Wolrdwide Developers Conference in San Jose, California on June 5, 2017. HomePod also works as a home assistant, just like Echo.

To be "smart", the latest product in Apple's portfolio, known as HomePod, comes with a A8 microprocessor chip, the same power engine in the company's flagship iPhone smartphone and iPad tablet computer.

Speaking at the conference earlier today, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing Philip Schiller said that the device will "reinvent home music. just like the iPod reinvented music in our pockets".

While real-time acoustic modeling, also known as automatic room-sensing technology, will enable the speaker to learn its position in the room and optimize the music listening experience based on the same.

The voice-activated loudspeaker is powered by Apple's virtual assistant Siri, who can respond to users questions and commands around the home.

The Apple HomePod will launch this December in white or gray and will cost $349. Whether you care about a lot of them is not what I'm here to talk about, but I did want to at least highlight the HomePod, which is Apple's Google Home and Amazon Echo competitor. You can connect 2 HomePods at the same time enabling both the speakers to work together and deliver the best sound. She's expected to speak about improving workforce diversity. Although Siri does support a narrow set of third party voice actions on iOS devices, it's unclear whether these will be accessible on HomePod. All thanks to Apple's new AirPlay 2.

You'll be able to play music (obviously), connect multiple in a single room, and use a multiroom setup too (like Sonos or Google Home).

Apple said the HomePod will also be compatible with the company's HomeKit system for controlling smart home devices, like lighting, heating, air conditioning and home security systems.
