As US weighs climate pullout, United Nations wants world to be more ambitious

U.N. Secretary General António Guterres issued a veiled warning to President Donald Trump during his first major speech on global warming should the US withdraw from the Paris agreement on climate change.

Johnson told Sky News that Britain still wants the U.S.to take the lead in fighting climate change and called on individual USA states to keep making progress on that front. Friends of the Earth said it would make America the world's "foremost climate villain".

That fight has played out within Trump's administration.

The Paris Agreement sealed in 2015 brought together the US and European Union with big developing nations from China to India to Brazil in pledging limits on fossil-fuel pollution and funds to help poorer countries adapt to climate change.

We are appalled and disappointed, but we are not deterred.

Withdrawing from Paris would leave the US alone with Russian Federation among the world's industrialized economies in rejecting action to combat climate change. With private sector momentum behind clean energy, states, cities, and regions are taking action.

Global leaders began reacting to the reports of Trump's plans.

White House sources characterize Trump as about 95 percent decided on pulling out of the deal, and one source says the motivation behind Wednesday's leak to Axios, which first reported the president was definitely backing out of the Paris accord, may be to force the president into making a decision on this once and for all.

Here is a data and graphs released by NASA, showing that climate change is real and highly unsafe, and that climate change is not just a hoax invented by the Chinese. French President Emmanuel Macron spoke with Trump at length about the issue during a meeting in Brussels, and even at the Vatican, Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin made his own pro-Paris pitch to Trump and his advisers.

US coal company shares dipped alongside renewable energy stocks on Wednesday after reports that President Donald Trump plans to pull the United States from a global accord on fighting climate change.

Guterres also pledged to work with developing countries to mobilize resources to tackle the impact of climate change and strengthen efforts by small island states against "the existential threat" that global warming poses.

Senate Majority Leader, Sen. "And climate solutions provide opportunities that are unmatchable".

The landmark agreement was signed in December 2015 and has been ratified by 147 countries, including the US.

Speaking in Berlin about the Paris climate change accord, he said that "China in recent years has stayed true to its commitment". The reason is three-fold: Climate change is undeniable.

Other European leaders issued more explicit appeals to the USA government not to abandon worldwide measures against climate change.

However, Trump declared, emphasizing every word: "As of today, the United States will cease all implementation of the nonbinding Paris accord".

He said the deal would have cost taxpayers billions of dollars.

The climate pact urges countries to intensify the actions and investments needed for a sustainable low carbon future. Even fossil fuel companies such as Exxon Mobil, BP and Shell say the United States should abide by the deal.

The secretary-general's speech comes as Trump this week decides if the USA - the second-largest emitter of greenhouse gases after China - will adhere to the emissions cut layed out in the 2015 Paris climate agreement.

As Mayor of the island of O'ahu, which is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, we know all too well that climate change is already having impacts on our coastal infrastructure and natural resources. Yet, what we are witnessing in these early years of a systemic response is the opposite.

Barbara Hendricks said other countries will fill the leadership void left by the United States but none will be expected to make up the shortfall in emissions reductions caused by Washington's exit.
