Battle of the smart speakers - Apple HomePod versus the rest

On Monday, Apple announced its own stand-alone product to compete with Amazon's Echo and Google Home: the HomePod, which the company is promoting as a sort of sophisticated music speaker with Siri built in.

Apple have announced their new HomePod smart speaker. Whereas, the Apple HomePod, Amazon Echo, and Google Home all have them, Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant.

According to Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, the HomePod will "reinvent how we enjoy music wirelessly throughout our homes". Siri can also be employed to play songs through the company's streaming service Apple Music. As a regular music speaker though, it is pretty well equipped with an in-built subwoofer for deep, clean bass tones and an array of seven beam-forming tweeter speakers that aim to offer clarity for mid and high tones as well as directional audio.

HomePod is a rounded cylinder about 7-inches tall (it looks like the "trashcan" Mac Pro). And, with HomeKit integration similar to what's available on the iPhone, the user can ask Siri, via their HomePod to control connected devices in their home.

Another thing working against the HomePod is its support of only one music platform, Apple Music. Well, it really is Apple's version of a smart home speaker.

When will Apple release HomePod? It unveiled the Apple Watch in September 2014."Though Apple appears to be playing catch up with Amazon and Google, the primary casualty here may be Sonos".

Created to be optimised when used with an Apple Music subscription, Apple says HomePod can "provide deep knowledge of personal music preferences and tastes and helps users discover new music."By saying things "Hey Siri, I like this song", HomePod will work to learn the musical preferences of a user (including genres, moods and playlists) and music tastes shared across devices".

One can ask HomePod any question and have Siri respond.

For instance, Apple's large-size iPhones are now popular, after Apple initially resisted them despite strong sales for larger-display phones made by Samsung and other rivals.

However, the other two have smart home and third party support. "In fact, Apple almost positioned as something that's not that important".

The HomePod will take on Amazon's Echo (left) and Google Home (right).

It can also be used to control other devices in the home, and reportedly will be in competition against Amazon's Echo and Google Home. No more so than the services in your house like where you buy your washing machine, or the choice of whether you shop at Nordstrom or Amazon. Besides, we will have to wait and see how the public will receive the upcoming Echo Show that will go on sale June 28th. We doubt that folks at Amazon are too concerned about Siri taking over Alexa in the home assistant department in the foreseeable future.
