Budget office sees 22 million fewer covered with Senate bill

Facing a potentially disastrous defeat by members of his own party, US Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has chose to delay a vote on healthcare legislation in order to get more support from Republican senators.

At least five Republican senators all say they will oppose a key procedural vote expected this week on the GOP health care plan that will repeal and replace Obamacare - a move that would effectively block the GOP health care bill from reaching the floor.

Republican leaders wanted to formally introduce the plan as early as Tuesday, but defections started even before the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said late Monday that the bill would leave an additional 22 million Americans without health insurance in a decade.

Republican leadership can only afford two "no" votes from their party in the Senate, assuming all Democrats vote against the health care legislation. Sen.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., joined by, from left, Sen.

McConnell first delivered the message to GOP senators at a private lunch attended by Vice President Mike Pence and White House chief of staff Reince Priebus.

"All of these things together make me very concerned that we're not going to fix the problem here", said Paul. States that were critical to Trump's election victory would see sharp increases, even after subsidies, including Ohio, Pennsylvania, Florida, Wisconsin and MI. Though the uninsured number is slightly lower than that of the House bill passed last month, it could double by 2026.

At least four conservative Republican senators said they were still opposed after the CBO analysis. The bill would cut taxes, reduce the deficit, and phase out the Medicaid expansion implemented by Barack Obama's health law.

"All GOP senators invited to the White House at 4 pm et to talk health care with Trump", Fox News congressional reporter Chad Pergram reports. After the CBO report's release, he was joined by Rand Paul of Kentucky, Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, Susan Collins of ME and Mike Lee of Utah in saying they would refuse to bring the bill to the Senate floor.

U.S. stock prices fell on Tuesday after the decision to postpone the vote.

It also ends the tax penalty the ACA imposes on people who don't buy insurance and on larger businesses that don't offer coverage to workers, gives states more flexibility in their approach to health care, defunds Planned Parenthood for a year and offers controls aimed at stabilizing insurance markets.

All three senators remained optimistic in their statements that the Senate will eventually be able to draft a better bill for the people in their states. Trump has called the House bill "mean" and prodded senators to produce a package with more "heart".

McConnell and Trump have been holding meetings with the resistant senators.

"Vote after break. McConnell wants to win".
