Canada proves Lewis Hamilton's lucky charm again as Brit wins in Montreal

Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One Team driver Lewis Hamilton was overjoyed to take such a comprehensive win in Canada on Sunday, after the previous round in Monaco left the triple world champion and the German squad puzzled as to why they were so below par on performance.

But the 18-year-old showed his skill to become the first Canadian not named Villeneuve to score points in a Formula One race.

"It was our first one-two of the year so in terms of optimal points it was the most powerful weekend we've had, and we maximised it".

"When everyone is there and everyone is happy it feels good, especially at home". I cant think of a better place to do it.”.

Then he and Bottas thrashed Ferrari, turning the tables on their rivals who finished one-two in Monaco.

While the Mercedes pair streeted the field it was a stellar drive from Ricciardo, who managed to make his way onto the podium for a third straight race after starting in sixth.

Verstappen's pain was Hamilton's gain as it made his task all that much easier. "It was really down to the team, great minds working together, communicating". "It was fantastic teamwork".

"Here the vehicle was back where it should be". It doesn't mean it's going to be like that all the time, but I think we learned a lot.

"I knew where Sebastian was throughout the race", said Hamilton, who crossed the line a commanding 20 seconds clear of Bottas.

Hamilton's victory, built on an equally outstanding "Senna-esque" lap for his 65th pole position on Saturday, lifted him to within 12 points of Vettel in the drivers' championship while Mercedes regained the lead in the constructors' contest, eight points ahead of Ferrari.

Haas F1 driver Romain Grosjean picked up a point by finishing 10th. Contact pitched Sainz into the wall and he spun into the corner, collecting Felipe Massa's Williams and sending both men out of the race.

"What a mental guy", Grosjean told his pit crew about Sainz over the radio.

Race leader Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton (44), of Britain, completes a lap at the Canadian Grand Prix auto race Sunday, June 11, 2017, in Montreal.

The resulting pitstop dropped Vettel to the very back of the field and the late-race charge, featuring some courageous overtaking, provided one of the highlights of the race. But on Lap 11, Verstappen's Red Bull died at the side of the track, ending his day and leaving Hamilton and Bottas alone in front.

The British driver said that Canada was a "blow" to Ferrari, but German Vettel insists that is not anxious. Kimi Raikkonen put Ferrari at the top of the timesheets in the second session. At least they brought Ricciardo home in 3 for a popular podium finish, but they will be ruing missed opportunities on Max's side of the garage.

"I think coming back to that group at the end of the race", Vettel said.

"It was tough I was defending the whole race and we weren't that quick to be honest. It was getting quite hot, so my concentration was being tested, but it's awesome to be on the podium again".

The incident ended both their days and brought out the safety car.At the restart Verstappen attacked Hamilton hard, nearly making a pass that would have changed the race.

"It's always been a special place for me", said Hamilton.

Canada has proved kind to Hamilton over the years - indeed it was here a decade ago where the Englishman recorded his first of now 56 career triumphs - and so it proved once more this weekend.
