Canadian 'impacted' by London attack

British police arrested a dozen people Sunday over a vehicle and knife attack in London that left seven people dead, as Londoners told how a weekend night out in the city erupted into violence and terror, lightened by moments of kindness and acts of heroism.

Holly Jones, a BBC reporter who was on the bridge when the attack happened, said she saw a van travelling at about 50 miles an hour.

Seven people were killed when three jihadis mowed down several people on London Bridge before launching a vile stabbing attack in Borough Market.

"He swerved right round me and then hit about five or six people", Jones said.

"A man suddenly appeared in the restaurant with a massive knife - some people in the restaurant believe there may have been another man - but it was so chaotic it was hard to tell", the witness said.

The assault unfolded over a few terrifying minutes late Saturday, starting when a rented van veered off the road and barrelled into pedestrians on busy London Bridge.

Prime Minister Theresa May called for tougher measures to contain Islamic extremism in a statement outside her offices in Downing Street on Sunday.

This is a developing story and will be updated.

Armed police have responded to two "major police incidents" at London Bridge and Borough Market. "I saw at least one man stabbed in the chest about five times".

In March, a knife-wielding man went on a deadly rampage in the heart of Britain's seat of power, plowing a vehicle into pedestrians on London's Westminster Bridge before stabbing a police officer to death inside the gates of Parliament.

"As soon as we heard about the incident we immediately suspended dynamic pricing all around the area of the attacks - and shortly afterward across the whole of central London - just as we did following the attacks in Manchester and Westminster", he said. Witnesses reported seeing armed police fire into a Tapas restaurant at the market.

"I like learning about something before I talk", Mattis said.

Witnesses reported a vehicle hitting pedestrians and seeing injured people on the ground on the bridge.

May earlier described the attacks as "dreadful".

"But I'd also like to pay tribute to the bravery and professionalism of the emergency services who attended the incident, in particular those law enforcement colleagues who risked their lives to protect the public and confronted the attackers".

London's mayor, Sadiq Khan, urged Londonders not to be alarmed by the increased police presence across the city following the attack. London Bridge and the adjacent train station, as well as nearby Borough subway station, were still closed.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the incident, but the ensuing chaos - in a country still shaken by last month's bombing at a Manchester concert as well as an attack outside Parliament in March- quickly reverberated around the world.
