Cavs stave off elimination in Game 4 win over Warriors

Golden State Warriors forward Kevin Durant (35) argues with Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James (23) during the second half of Game 4 of basketball's NBA Finals in Cleveland, Friday, June 9, 2017.

CLEVELAND - The Warriors' dominance this postseason has left many wondering: Could Golden State beat the greatest teams in National Basketball Association history in a best-of-seven series?

The Cavs have forced a fifth game in the NBA Finals by trouncing the Warriors, 137-116.

CLEVELAND (AP) - Golden State's ideal postseason is over, the champagne corks still in their bottles.

"We have championship DNA", said James, who broke Magic Johnson's record with his ninth triple-double in the Finals. "We showed that tonight". We understand that, but we just felt that we have gotten better each game.

In becoming the first team in National Basketball Association history to open the playoffs 15-0, the Warriors had won by an average of 16.2 points. The 86 points were the most in a half in NBA Finals history.

All night, the fans stood and stomped and screamed and celebrating as if this were Game 7 of the Finals.

Cavs coach Tyronn Lue was asked about the inconsistent officiating, but couldn't take the bait following a win. We're going to respond but they aren't going to punk us. It was that simple last year, and it's that simple this year. Golden State will be at full strength this time, and while the Warriors have finally lost a game, they haven't lost any confidence.

Kerr said the Cavaliers played with a physicality his team failed to match. "I thought they played a tremendous game". "I think it was we played a desperate team on their home floor, a great team, with great players, and they came out and handed it to us".

James finished with 31 points, 10 rebounds, 11 assists and on one trip threw the ball off the backboard to himself for a dunk.

Kyrie Irving scored a game-high 40 points as the defending champion Cavaliers pulled to within 3-1 and forced the best-of-seven series back to Oakland. There's nothing wrong with a quick 3-pointer if the whole team is ready to get back on defense following the shot.

In any event, the Cavs are still breathing and it's now the Warriors who may be feeling the pressure after blowing a 3-1 lead last June. A technical that had been called on Draymond Green in the first half, seemed to be mysteriously reversed when Green was called for a second technical in the second half, but not ejected.

But in the third quarter, the refs said that the first half tech shouldn't have been called on Green. James had two foul shots with 2.9 seconds left and missed one, otherwise Cleveland would've hung 50 on the Warriors. Instead of an ejection for Pachulia, however, he and Shumpert were slapped with technicals. Five of the six bookmakers had Golden State favored. The Warriors chipped away at the lead, but by the time the horn had sounded, the Cavs held a 49-33 lead.

And with every incredible jump shot. Irving tossed in 17 points during the quarter and James added 14 to power the Cleveland offense. The Cavs continued to win each quarter from then on, making sure that Golden State could never really get back into the game.

The Cavaliers cooled off in the early portion of the third quarter as the Warriors whittled the margin down to 12 points.

That was the Cavaliers on this wonderful first Friday night in June. There have been two one-loss champions: the 2001 Los Angeles Lakers (15-1) and 1983 Philadelphia 76ers (12-1).

"It's kind of comedy to me", Curry said. And that was my barometer.
