The video was released after three CNN journalists resigned Monday following the network's retraction of a story Friday about a supposed investigation into a pre-inaugural meeting between a Trump associate and the head of a Russian investment fund. CNN later deleted the story and replaced with an editor's note stating it "did not meet CNN's editorial standards".

The journalists who headed up the CNN Investigates unit, reporter Tom Frank, editor Eric Lichtblau and Lex Haris, were urged to resign by the network following the botched story which relied on false claims by one anonymous source. "Ratings way down!" Trump also took shots at other so-called "fake news" purveyors.

Earlier, Mr Scaramucci had described CNN's decision to retract the story and apologise as "classy move", saying he was moving on after the incident.

However, he has worked at CNN for nearly 15 years as a journalist and producer, and is thus well-positioned to offer both a reality check on the story his network has been driving and an insight into the network's motive.

White House deputy press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders speaks during the daily briefing at the White House in Washington, on June 27, 2017.

A spokesperson for CNN did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

"I mean, it's mostly bullshit right now", Bonifield says in the video. Sanders lauded the video, which apparently shows John Bonifield, a CNN health editor, complaining about the network's coverage of the Trump campaign's relationship with Russian Federation. "Ratings way down!" the president said.

CNN's Jim Acosta gets into nearly daily skirmishes with White House press secretary Sean Spicer over questions about the administration's transparency.

The following day, CNN informed employees that stories about Russian Federation must be first reviewed by CNNMoney executive editor Rich Barbieri and CNN vice president Jason Farkas, according to BuzzFeed.

"Even if Russian Federation was trying to swing an election, we try to swing their elections", Bonifield said. CNN also issued an apology to Scaramucci, who accepted it with a tweet on Saturday. CNN's public relations staff refuted Trump's notion that the network is hurting, saying it is completing the most-watched second quarter in the network's history. Three of CNN's most senior editorial staffers have resigned as a result of a fake news hit piece on Trump-Russia. The law firm of one victim recently sued O'Keefe, alleging violation of a federal wiretap law.

Trump tweeted that "they caught Fake News CNN cold".

"To report not on facts, but instead on narratives that yield high ratings, is exactly the definition of fake news", said O'Keefe.
