Compression tights don't help runners run faster

Now, all this doesn't mean compression tights don't serve a goal.

Chaudhari and his colleagues made a decision to pursue the study after reviewing research that found when muscles are vibrating, they "activate" more in an apparent attempt to reduce vibration. "In the study, runners performed the same with and without compression tights", Dr. Chaudhari revealed. Therefore, the thinking goes that the more we keep our muscles from vibrating, the less worn out we'll get.

One reason for trying to slow fatigue with compression tights, aside from running faster for longer, is the theory that worn out runners alter their form and put more strain on their joints, which may increase overuse injury risk.

The study, funded by Nike, found that although such garments greatly reduce muscle vibration, they play no part in reducing muscle fatigue when compared to running without them.

This new trend is basically form-fitting leggings that sportswear manufacturers claim hold muscles in place, allowing people to run faster, among other health benefits.

He says there's nothing in the study that shows it's bad to wear compression tights, and if runners feel better wearing them, that's a good enough reason. Chaudhari said, "So, if that's happening, over the course of a long run, that extra activation ought to lead to greater fatigue, because it basically takes more energy to be more active".

This study was supported by a research grant from Nike.

Two types of tights were tested - low compression and high compression - "as much as you can do without it becoming a medical device", Chaudhari said. "The Ohio State University study. produced an interesting data point that delivered an additional perspective on the study of compression tights", Nike wrote in a statement.

The study was presented at the American College of Sports Medicine's yearly meeting in Denver.

"Our goal is to better understand all aspects of human performance", she said.

Many distance runners swear by the use of compression tights to help improve their performance, but a medical conference has heard they don't help you go any faster, or further.

"When I was wearing the tights, I did feel like I had better support and that I wasn't getting as tired", he said.
