Cornet, Garcia advance in boost for home fans at French Open

Murray needed almost three hours to get past the 29th-seeded del Potro at Court Philippe Chatrier under a cloud-filled sky. Murray jogged to his seat at the changeover and the Argentinian stood at the net, bent at the waist, his head resting on the net.

Rafael Nadal feels umpires must allow players to "breathe a little" after he was involved in the latest time violation controversy at Roland Garros yesterday.

Del Potro's spirit was broken, and the vocal Paris crowd were quelled.

"I couldn't believe that I lost that set, because I had many opportunities to win", he said.

The second set followed in much the same fashion, the pair trading blows as Murray began to creep ahead.

From 3-5, Murray was able to rally and take the first set to a tiebreak where he won it 7-6 (8) after Del Potro sent a forehand wide on set point in what ended up being a thriller first set. While he hasn't had a great season so far, Murray has now reached the fourth round for the eighth time in 10 appearances in Paris.

"I think it's going to be a good match and good experience for me. Whoever had won that first set had big momentum", Murray said.

Zheng, in partnership with Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu, had to come back from one set down to beat Abigail Spears and Katarina Srebotnik 1-6, 6-4, 6-3.

The 2016 finalist was forced to dig deep in a marathon first set as he battled back from an early break and fended off four set points to win in a tie-breaker after one hour and 25 minutes.

"I practised with him before he got on to the tour when he was like 350, and he was really good", said Murray.

In the women's event, Romania's Simona Halep sealed her place in the fourth round with a 6-0, 7-5 win over Russia's Daria Kasatkina.

"The Davis Cup [which Del Potro won] was physically tough for me because it came off the back of a long summer", Murray said after a four-set struggle to get past the world No50 Martin Klizan on Thursday.

"If he keeps winning, his tournament can change quickly".

"Obviously the first set was very important".

The world number one needed 83 minutes to take the opening set but then surged to victory to set up a last 16 clash with either John Isner or Karen Khachanov.

Murray has failed to match the high standards he set a year ago so far in 2017, but has improved with every match at Roland Garros this week.

There will be a Frenchwoman in the quarterfinals of the French Open after Caroline Garcia beat Hsieh Su-wei to set up a fourth-round match against compatriot Alize Cornet.

1515 hrs IST: Cornet is already 5-2 up against Radwanska and if you think that was impressive enough, Cilic has raced off with the first set 6-1 against Feliciano Lopez.

Switzerland's third seed Stan Wawrinka progressed after claiming a 7-6, 6-0, 6-2 win over Italy's Fabio Fognini.
