Desired Palestinian State under Three Powers

Currently, more than 6,000 Palestinians are imprisoned by Israel, for offenses ranging from stone-throwing and membership in groups outlawed by Israel to attacks that killed or wounded Israelis.

"It is grossly misleading to examine only the enduring effects of the war while ignoring the context in which the war took place-the belligerence of the Arab states in the spring of 1967, and the silence of the worldwide community in the face of these threats and its failure to ensure the rights to free passage of global waterways", said ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt.

Also late last month, thousands of Israelis staged a mass rally in Tel Aviv to denounce the regime's occupation and express their support for an independent Palestinian state.

Marking 50 years since the start of the 1967 Arab-Israeli war, which resulted in Israel's occupation of the Palestinian Territory, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres today reiterated a call for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had pledged to build a new settlement for around 40 families of a wildcat Jewish outpost in the West Bank known as Amona, which was evacuated under court order in February.

The occupation continues, and under interim agreements with the Palestinians, Israel now has full security and civil control of 60 percent of the West Bank, including the Jordan valley.

Once a Palestinian state became a reality, Israel and the Arabs could declare peace and establish relations, ending the cycle of conflict that began with Israel's establishment in 1948.

There is a solid constituency for peace on both sides of the Green Line, both among Israelis and Palestinians.

The occupation of the Palestinian territories and the Syrian Golan "imposed a heavy humanitarian and development burden on the Palestinian people", many of whom are living in refugee camps, in abject poverty and with little or no prospect of a better life, Guterres said.

Fifty years later the West Bank remains occupied and the Gaza Strip is under a tight Israeli blockade.

This staggering investment suggests that Israel intends to stay put in the West Bank and East Jerusalem settlements, illegal under worldwide law, where about 600,000 colonists live among 2.9 million Palestinians and stir violence, protected by successive governments and deliberately not seen by the world for the irritant extremists that they are.

Israel occupied the West Bank, East Jerusalem al-Quds, the Gaza Strip and part of the Golan Heights during the offensive.
