Djokovic, Nadal, Unleash Storm in Paris

Rafael Nadal will take on Benoit Paire in the first round

Novak Djokovic made a winning start to his partnership with Andre Agassi and is keen to soak up as much knowledge as he can before the American heads back home.

Defending French Open singles champions Novak Djokovic and Garbiñe Muguruza each enjoyed straight sets victories in opening round action at Roland Garros today.

After 4 1/2 hours, including a final set that lasted 96 minutes, veteran David Ferrer rallied past Donald Young to reach the second round of the French Open. Reporter Kate Battersby noted that Agassi was "less than a picture of relaxation, fidgeting in his chair and keeping up a relentless point-by-point commentary with Djokovic's brother Marko".

Zverev, coming off a title at the Italian Open, dropped the first set 6-4 then took the second 6-3.

The Spaniard, whose last Grand Slam triumph came at Roland Garros in 2014, improved his incredible French Open record to 73 wins and just two losses.

A chance phone call led to Djokovic sounding out Agassi, who agreed to work with the Serb on a temporary basis - but only after persuasion from his wife and former tennis legend Steffi Graf. But Djokovic split with those coaches, as well as other members of his entourage, hoping to regain the groove that made him the first man in almost a half-century to win four consecutive majors.

Paire forced two break points but the world No 4 saved both, one with a backhand overhead that landed just inside the baseline.

Tomljanovic saved two match points on her serve to take the game to deuce but Bertens sealed the match when her opponent hit a forehand long.

- South Korea's Chung Hyeon beat men's 27th seed Sam Querrey 6-4 3-6 6-3 6-3 in the first round.

Nine-times champion Rafa Nadal, who practiced in the early hours to avoid the searing heat, faces the unpredictable Benoit Paire of France. "Not only that but Francesca is a legend and I was very excited to play on Philippe Chatrier court with her", said Muguruza, referring to the fact that Schiavone, now 36, had won the tournament in 2010. "I'm very happy to be back here after what happened previous year".

Also seeing early wins are fifth seeded Milos Raonic and third seeded Stan Wawrinka.

In the women's section, Garbine Muguruza downed 2010 victor Francesca Schiavone 6-2, 6-4 in her first round tie. Playing almost two-and-a-half hours, he was tested but also went through in straight sets on a hot, blustery day in southwest Paris. The fourth seed is to meet Estonia's Anett Kontaveit for a place in round 3.
