Factchecking President Trump's Claims About the Paris Agreement

Trump said the Paris agreement was poorly negotiated and would harm the USA economy.

To remain aligned with the Paris Agreement, cities will be focusing on expanding renewable energy sources for utilities, launching infrastructure projects that are more energy efficient, and offering subsidies for customers buying electric cars and solar panels.

Trump said he was willing to begin renegotiating the climate deal "under the terms that are fair to the U.S. and its workers or to negotiate a new deal that protects our country and its taxpayers".

"And we need to think what to do further", he said.

Speaking directly to Trump, The Terminator star said: "As a public servant and especially as a president, your first and most important responsibility is to protect the people.

But the bottom line is that the Paris accord is very unfair, at the highest level, to the United States", Trump said.

West Virginia Coal Association Senior Vice President Chris Hamilton said USA withdrawal from the Paris accord would build confidence in US mining and industry even if it wouldn't make major changes on the ground. Energy Secretary Rick Perry had voiced support for renegotiating the terms of the agreement, which Trump pledged to do Thursday - but in the aftermath of USA withdrawal, not as an alternative to it.

Obama said Trump's decision reflected "the absence of American leadership", but that he was confident that U.S. cities, states and businesses will fill the void by taking the lead on protecting the climate.

Exiting the deal is also the last straw for some players in the business world who had joined Trump's advisory council in the hopes of keeping him from making bad decisions like this one.

Led by Germany's Angela Merkel and France's Emmanuel Macron, they branded Trump's decision as misguided and vowed to defend an accord they portrayed as crucial for the future of the planet.

It was a burning question the day after Trump announced that he had made a decision to withdraw the United States from the Paris climate accord. "They can do whatever they want in 13 years but not us". Several of his top aides also opposed the action, including his daughter, Ivanka Trump.

He said India along with China would double their coal-fired power plants in the years to come, gaining a financial advantage over the US.

Meanwhile, Democrats have launched a war of words since the moment Trump made the announcement, including former President Barack Obama.

"The President made clear that the door remains open to future United States involvement in the Agreement".

"Americans are not walking away from the Paris Climate Agreement".

"We are grateful to Bloomberg Philanthropies for this generous contribution", UNFCCC Executive Secretary Patricia Espinosa said in a news release about the funding pledge. This country is the world's second biggest carbon emitter behind China.
