She hailed the win as her second of the season, with the first being her actual return to the court in Paris.

Kvitova looked in good shape again early on against Bethanie Mattek-Sands in round two but the American fought back to win 7-6 (7/5) 7-6 (7/5).

Williams, seeded 10, has played every year since 1997 with the exception of 2011 and despite her senior citizen status, she is still a contender at the Slams as her run to the Australian Open final in January proved.

Kerber's strokes were off against Makarova, who has reached two major semifinals but never been past the fourth round in Paris.

The Czech said: "It's weird".

"It's weird. I mean, I'm disappointed, for sure".

Victory over compatriot Ekaterina Kozlova allowed Tsurenko for the first time in his career to reach the second round of the Open championship of France. The motivation I had today was awesome - and I really just didn't want to lose. Boserup, a 25-year-old American ranked 85, made it more competitive after that without ever threatening a comeback. I think so, I think I could play just fine but I wanted to be mentally ready to go out there and grind and be in the routine. The fairytale ended. Now, in upcoming weeks, I think it will be business as usual. She will need to reevaluate her game before the second half of 2017.

Kvitova dropped her racket and held her head in her hands, her eyes filling with tears while her support team, wearing T-shirts marked "Courage, Belief, Pojd" (Come on! in Czech), celebrated wildly.

"Of course I'm sad; I don't want to hide that", Halep said of her disappointment. "I really enjoyed my singles out there". I have the best memories which I can have.

During her on-court interview, Kvitova addressed Novak, her family and others in her guest box, saying: "Thank you for everything you helped me through (in) this hard time". She underwent over three hours of surgery to fix tendons and nerves in her fingers and was told not to put weight on her left hand for three months. After that, she was looking back in form.

Before going to Roland Garros, she had promised her doctor she would stop if she felt any pain. Kerber lost her opener in Stuttgart where she was the defending champion, suffered a thigh injury in the third round in Madrid and lost first time out in Rome.

"I won the match today but I knew I had already won", she added, referencing the initial nightmare scenario where she feared she d lose the fingers on her left playing hand.

"It must be an interesting feeling to say the least".

The Russian was thrilled with her victory.

The Estonian has been one of the revelations of the clay-court season and had Muguruza in all sorts of trouble at a set and a break down.

Makarova wins her meeting with Kerber in straight sets.

Things do not get any easier for the Spaniard, who next meets 27th seed Yulia Putintseva.

0 - Number of No. 1-seeded women who had lost in the first round of the French Open during the professional era before Kerber was beaten by Ekaterina Makarova 6-2, 6-2.
