GOP senators now oppose health bill - enough to sink it

The Senate would phase out Obamacare's expansion of the Medicaid program for the poor more gradually than the House bill, waiting until after the 2020 presidential election, but would enact deeper cuts starting in 2025.

Sen. Mike Enzi on Wednesday said that Republicans aren't going to listen to Democrats in their attempt to alter the new Health care bill due to the fact that Democrats didn't listen to Republicans on Obamacare.

In a press conference with Nevada governor Brian Sandoval today, Senator Dean Heller joined his colleague Susan Collins in taking a very negative, and possibly irreconcilable, position on the Senate version of the American Health Care Act.

Among the changes outlined in the bill, called the Better Care Reconciliation Act, are provisions to end Affordable Care Act mandates requiring most Americans to have health insurance.

"We have to send the message to our elected officials and we depend on our elected officials to champion our cause in Washington", said Pamela Clarke, the health center's CEO.

Small business owner Molly Connor is one of 70,000 Hoosiers who may lose her insurance on Indiana's exchange.

Republican Senator Rob Portman says he looks forward to reviewing the Congressional Budget Office's fiscal analysis of the GOP proposal.

Heller's comments that the bill "takes insurance away from tens of millions of Americans" could cause a political headache for Republicans in other competitive races, including those of House Republicans who have voted for their chamber's bill and are considering U.S. Senate bids.

"The protections around pre-existing conditions are still in place in the Senate bill, but the waiver authority gives states options that could include limiting coverage for people with pre-existing conditions", says Pearson.

Since passing the ACA, Mr. Obama said "more than 90 percent of Americans know the security of health insurance".

Already conservative GOP Sens.

While Senators have been working on the legislation since the AHCA passed the House, Democrats including Menendez have taken issue with the "secretive" nature by which the bill was drafted.

Meanwhile, current President Donald Trump wasn't too receptive of the house healthcare bill, which he labels as "mean".

But the Senate bill would make subsidies less generous than under current law. "People aren't out here because it's super fun to be in the spitting rain, protesting for hours, people are out here because it's literally life or death", Vashti Bandi of South Philadelphia said. The legislation could affect 210,000 Nevada residents insured through the health care law's expansion of Medicaid. Reducing taxes, Republicans argue, will boost the economy, and shrinking spending on programs such as Medicaid will slow the growth of the federal debt.
