There was no talk of underdogs at the Canadian Grand Prix on Sunday as Lewis Hamilton led Mercedes to a first one-two finish of the season in a ideal response to Ferrari's Monaco domination. His pole position on Sunday - earnt with a scintillating new lap record that put more than 0.33 seconds between him and Vettel on the front row - was the 65th of his career, putting him equal second with childhood hero Ayrton Senna in Formula One's all-time pole tally. "To repeat it this weekend is incredibly special", Hamilton said.

Team-mate Valtteri Bottas was also able to comfortably stay ahead of the rest of the field, to bring home Mercedes first one-two result of the season.

"I don't think we've completely got rid of all the issues we have", he said.

Germany's Sebastian Vettel with Ferrari came in fourth after he managed to pass Mexico's Sergio Perez with Force India followed by Perez's French colleague Esteban Ocon.

"They are still very, very quick and they are still very much there", he told Sky Sports.

With limited time to get the vehicle prepared for the flyaway Canadian race in Montreal, Wolff was full of praise for his team as they worked overtime to mend the W08.

"I know what I did, what issues I had, at the time that I encountered them, so I don't have to go back over that", he said.

While Mercedes celebrated a return to form, the struggles continued down the paddock at McLaren as double world champion Fernando Alonso, back from his Indianapolis 500 adventure, failed to get out of the second qualifying and will start 12th.

"I'm shaking", said the visibly emotional Hamilton. "I'm shaken, speechless. Ayrton, he was why I wanted to be here today".

"This is the time to keep our feet on the ground, keep working hard and take it one race at a time".

Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo was third for the third straight week, but teammate Max Verstappen lasted just 20 laps despite jumping from fourth to second at the start. "Then with a few laps to go I heard Seb [Vettel] was coming".

Hamilton made the most of the re-start and resisted another Verstappen attack before Vettel, his front wing clearly damaged, pitted for repairs. "Seeing the Ferrari further back, I thought, 'That's fantastic for us'". However, the same could barely avert Vettel's charge on the Indian team as the Ferrari driver passed both drivers to take fourth. But it was Senna, Hamilton's favourite driver, who was the target.

"It's a long race here, especially when you're out there on your own, but I knew the vehicle would hold together and it did perfectly".

The 18-year-old Stroll, on the grid for the first time before his home fans, finished for only the third time in seven races this season and achieved his goal of earning his first points at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, where he watched the race with family as a child.

Behind them, Sainz collided with Frenchman Romain Grosjean's Haas and then spun and crashed into the barriers, collecting Brazilian Felipe Massa's Williams along the way.
