How the 'Wonder Woman' box office gross compares to other superhero movies

The previous record was just over $85 million, and was held by Fifty Shades of Grey director Sam Taylor-Johnson. Gadot first debuted as Wonder Woman in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice". For starters, the film's 93% Rotten Tomatoes score and extremely lofty reviews across the board have bested Doctor Strange, the Captain America films, the Avengers films, Thor, and is almost on par with the 94% score of the 2008 Iron Man flick.

The film's robust earnings are a big win for DC Comics, which has often struggled to match the success of Marvel properties at the box office.

"I think that in superhero movies, they fight other people, they fight villains", Jenkins told Fandango. Its significance goes far beyond even that though, thanks in large part to its massive $223 million opening.

In its opening weekend, Wonder Woman made $103.1 million in North America and an additional $122.5 million internationally, already easily making back its total budget and surpassing analyst expectations of $80 million domestically with a total gross of $225 million worldwide.

Official synopsis: Wonder Woman hits movie theaters around the world next summer when Gal Gadot returns as the title character in the epic action adventure from director Patty Jenkins. "You want to do a movie like this because you believe in it", she said. I thought it was truly a life-saver for a franchise that desperately needed a winning movie.

"All I can say is it was a dilemma".

There's no confirmation of a follow-up to "Wonder Woman" on Warner Bros.' end, but the critical acclaim and early earnings from the original probably make it a safe bet.

"I'm not a big obligation person when it comes to art".
